Re: Lagoon 42 vs everything else
Late to the party, but the wife and I just purchased a 2020 Lagoon 42 Owners version from a friend and after coming from a Benny 320, I 'd like to put our 2 cents in. We're currently doing all the solar and lithium batt bank along with getting to know the boat. We find it is very easy to sail with just the two of us. We looked at all the brands out there, but the purchase we made fit our budget.
As mentioned by Laurief, the oven is bad, the gas range is a close second. The mattresses are really bad - at least on ours, but we found 4 inch memory foam from wally world that are very comfy. The fridge is awful also - ices up. These seem to be the same problems many Lagoon owners have.
Aside from these things we like it! We're going to induction and a convection microwave along with a minute pot to do our cooking on. We'll probably use a Dometic 12v fridge /freezer for keeping things cold/frozen.
Other than these things, she sails very nicely and at 60yo, I can appreciate more room and stability. We're hoping to sail over to Europe to visit friends and family at the end of the year.
John

Re: Lagoon 42 vs everything else
I have not been on or sailed any of the boats in this thread, just to get that out there.
I personally like galley down, and dont feel the need for dual helms. Auto pilot will be doing 95% of the steering, so dual helms to me does not make sense. For the same reason a fly bridge does not, under sail hang out in the cockpit and the wheel is right there if needed. I dont mind looking thru the cabin, but I like the leopard 38 helm position
I dont like the look of the lagoon wall of windows, no reason just dont like it.
The good thing is there is a boat layout for everyone, as everyone has different wants.

The Author tries very hard to justify a galley down. The reasons he uses leaves one feeling that he has actually never sailed on a decent modern galley up cat.

It’s a very subjective subject. We’ve owned both galley up and galley down cats and both myself and my wife prefer the galley down. We don’t care much about the ease of communication between galley and salon/helm, but we both agree that you need a really large cat to have enough salon or galley space in a galley up cat.

Galley up, always.
(and this comes from the Admiral, so counts twice)

Galley down always, unless on a 45 ft plus boat that otherwise has excess space topsides. And this comes from the Admiral, who has owned two catamarans with galley down, so counts 2 x twice. And whose last boat upsize was totally her idea, so maybe counts 4 x twice!

Re: Lagoon 42 vs everything else
We have the original lagoon 42(tpi) with galley down. Many friends who have newer, prettier cats comment on how spacious and more usable our galley is. Personally, I prefer having galley down.

So if we’ve owned 9 catamarans that were galley down and that’s what the Admiral prefers does that mean we get 9 x twice?
Our galley up preference for a catamaran would probably start at about 50’, but hell that’s a dream that we used to have!

Absolutely! I just felt that every reason he gave to justify galley down was not present in either of our 2 cats we owned, hence my thoughts.
I must say the forward facing galley on the new Leopards is absolutely awesome. We love the saloon/galley layout of our Leopard 40, in fact we find it more spacious than our previous 44. It is so light and airy, and this is essential if your Admiral is slightly prone to sea sickness!
Wouldn't the world be boring if we all liked the same thing!
PS: You only get extra votes if you have more than one Admiral!

Oh... I love a good galley up, galley down debate.
Galley down for us, but then we have a dinette down as well.
Here is a galley up down.

Re: Lagoon 42 vs everything else
I guess it also depends on where you cruising. Warm or cold!

That is just an excuse not a valid reason.
It is a well known fact that the temperature in the hull of a catamaran is very well controlled, cooler in summer and warmer in winter

Ha ha.
My thinking is that in colder climates you might spend more time indoors and therefore need larger Saloon area, so galley down. Whereas in the tropics you use more outdoor area so you do not need as much saloon space, so you can have galley up, saloon open and 1 big open plan living eating area!
Never could understand people who go to the tropics only to live in an air-conditioned cocoon!!
