Joyon's IDEC Capsized on Record Attempt

Joyon, superman that he is, is reported well and seems calmly in control of the situation. Sailing in very difficult conditions (squally 10-30 knots) the boat flipped in a violent squall even though the main sheet and traveler were released and only a small jib was drawing. The capsize was quick and Joyon was trapped under the nets in the dark. Somehow he managed to swim out and clamber up the front beam and get into the boat through the escape hatch. He spent the night outside lighting the boat to warn traffic and used his sat phone to organize salvage. His boat is habitable enough that he plans to stay with it while it is salvaged.

It is another racing casualty so not directly on topic for this forum, of course. But perhaps worth a though for us cruisers anyway. Mobility was critical to getting free of the boat and access to emergency equipment was key to timely rescue and salvage.

Tom.
