Insurance Resume
Hi All -
We’re about 2 years in to a 4 year “cruise full time” plan, starting from pretty much scratch. I’ve read quite a bit about the state of the insurance market and want to make sure I’m not crazy - would the resume below be reasonable for decent insurance?
Goal:
40-45ft catamaran, probably about 5 years old, USA + Bahamas for first year, then Caribbean
Experience for both wife and I:
- 3 years owning and cruising 32ft monohull NYC, LIS. A few week long trips and lots of weekends and day sailing
- ASA 101,103,104,105,114
- 3x week long catamaran charters in BVI/USVI
- 1x week long catamaran charter Chesapeake
- 2x 7 day offshore passages/deliveries, monohull (myself only)

Re: Insurance Resume
Looks good. Varies widely based on insurance company. My one before last wanted such a detailed list it took days. Which boats did I sail? Which days? Crew resumes. Minimum crew requirement for offshore sailing. My current one, not so much. I would recommend a good agent to help. They know the company's and what they are doing. Costs you nothing.

Re: Insurance Resume
I dont think you will have a problem getting approved. I always submit a boaters resume with my clients submission to the underwriter. That way they have the whole picture of the potential insureds' qualifications. It def helps.

Re: Insurance Resume
Frank (Buoycall) is a good guy and very helpful.
Get the number of hours/miles etc. More details the better.

Agree with this. Put the number of nm traveled, how big the boats were, and especially if your responsibility was captain (or even co-captain). May help if you can show varied experience such as both offshore, ICW. I assume you chartered large boats? Did you take any significant trips either as crew or co-captain on anyone else boat?

Re: Insurance Resume
Thanks all - super helpful. I'll definitely include all the details, NM, etc, when I put together an actual resume.
What I'm gathering is that I'll definitely have to sell myself a bit, but I shouldn't have too much trouble when the time comes.
Thank you - I'll definitely reach out as we get close, BuoyCall.

Look forward to helping. Funny thing is our plan to move aboard in a few years, Insurance was my biggest fear/unknown a couple years ago so I went to work for an insurance company to learn this niche because I could never get the answers I wanted unless I was ready to buy right then and there. Def learned a lot and glad I can help where I can. My plan is to obtain a Captains license, get a couple years experience and do weekend charters to supplement my police retirement. Well that's our plan, only 50 now so hopefully we will have enough gas in the tank to get there...lol.
