There is some interesting footage available on Youtube on this particular storm.
Having been to this area just two weeks before I know that most boats must have left the anchorage before the thunderstorm arrived. Normally there is way more boats there, so some must have taken chances while others left due to
weather forecast.
The GRIB
forecast was around 20kn from the north (parallel to the beach) for that day, with severe thunderstorms and a gale warning for nearby gulf of valencia. Not a comfortable spot to ride out a gale.
Typically one can be happy to have 1:2 scope there without touching a neighbor. At least its good holding sand there, that particular area does not have
mooring bouys.
Here is another video:
Looks like the first
boat had the
genoa unfurled and dragged anchor at very little wind (look at the wind scoop at right side of the beach).
Certainly not a freak wind given the good visibility and non-existing waves.
I would like to know what windspeed where recorded at peak times, but to me it looks like some 40kn for a few moments. Looking at videos of the aftermath and the remaining it doesn't seem to be a long lasting thunderstorm. Just look at the relatively small waves here.
or here
Still a freaking experience I bet with all the thunder and
lighting around while rain pours down.
