Holiday Gifts For Sailors
I wasn't sure where to put this, and I generally post here most often. So, HERE is where it is going to be posted.
I'm looking for holiday gift ideas for my husband... And, I thought that perhaps you all would be a good source of ideas for sailing related gifts.
My mom bought him a sexton, and a celestial navigation guide. (he is already a Navigator and has training in that, so he should be able to use that. )
But, as far as what I'm getting him, I'm stuck!
He did give me one idea... but you have to promise not to laugh. My husband wants a drone, to scout out anchorages.. And you thought I was insane!! I've been looking at them, but I'm not sure I'm tech savvy enough to make a good choice.
Can anyone think of something else that he could use and enjoy on our boat? present and future?

Re: Holiday Gifts For Sailors
I guess they make inexpensive drones. I'd go with that.
You already know he'll like it.

Re: Holiday Gifts For Sailors
I would like an inexpensive drone (remember it needs floats).
Santa, are you listening (reading)??

Now, see... THAT's what I thought too!! And yes.. they make very inexpensive ones.. But, of course, those cheap ones don't have the FEATURES he thinks he needs. So, he dropped one into his amazon wishlist... $1200!!!!!! really?!?!? I can certainly tell you that he isn't getting THAT one!!
And, of course they make them as cheap as $20, but you know that isn't going to cut the mustard. See.. there are all these technical specs, and the cheap ones don't have FPV or RTP, camera's stabilizers, wifi.. or who knows! so, I'm having to navigate the world of drones to find a reasonably priced one that has the features he wants. UGH!!
Why can't I just get him a tie or something?!?!

Nothing says I love you like a new generation anchor. Scope out those anchorages with a Rocna.

Just pricing these things and noticed this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Syma-X5C-Chann...keywords=drone
I'm a bit leery of the many great reviews, but if they're not fudging the positive reviews, this might be a good starter drone.

Please don't. They're almost as obnoxious as jet skis and underwater lights.
Seriously, do you have cruising guides and charts of the places you want to cruise? Paper versions.
How is he with weather? How are YOU with weather? (You get to share all these practical things.) For a good starter weather book check out Chris Parker's book, "Coastal and Offshore Weather." It's available at Amazon and Chris web site, Marine Weather Center - Bahamas & Caribbean Marine Weather Services.
Fishing tackle?
Tools - especially metric.
Really nice binoculars.
The list could be endless....

If my girlfriend and I were enjoying some private cockpit time and a drone flew by..... Out comes the slingshot!

Re: Holiday Gifts For Sailors
As far as drones go... You could get a gopro and mount it to a remote controlled helicopter thing and then fly it over the area to scout ? Yea ok thats pretty far fetched, but it's happening! I watch some cool kayak videos and they have this gizmo to catch some unreal footage dropping off waterfalls.
Whoa with some google love there is such a thing
