Hawaii next America's Cup venue?

What's the consensus on Honolulu as the next America's Cup venue...great time zone, blue water, and lots of wind? BTW, anyone have the email address for the Oracle America's Cup Syndicate? Thx in advance...

Official announcement today. Its us, Bermuda, or San Diego. We have an entire ex-US Navy seaplane base to stage the event out of.

Hawaii? Bermuda? San Diego?

Doesn't really matter after the best venue gave it up for what sounds
like political arrogance and greed.

After seeing it in person, once from the deck of a boat and three times
from shore where the boats at the first mark were close enough to see faces of the racers. Costing no more than the gas to get there.

The San Franciscan political machine who let this get away should be
flogged, keelhauled, then hung by the yardarm.
Oh yeah! and fired!

Re: Hawaii next America's Cup venue?

Just when they finally defined America's Cup boats that made for exciting racing and regenerated my interest in the event... they start this political and profit motivated squabbling. Makes me kinda sick, and drives me back to my previous indifference.

Almost makes me think favorably about the way the old NYYC manipulated things so that they always could win! At least in that case it wasn't monetary greed that drove things.

Fortunately as a cruiser I have other things to occupy my attention.

The whole idea of moving to mutihulls was they envisioned NASCAR style competitive racing on the water would draw paying crowds. And the reason?

Money.

It would never have been Honolulu anyway. Larry owns a big slab of Lanai so if anywhere in Hawaii it would be there. You can expect the place to host an AC 45 regatta.

My money says San Diego.

AC34 was a big $$$$ loser for SF. They did the smart thing and they don't need all the aggro either.

Don't believe Larry's marketing BS.

The Bay to Breakers Race, Chinese New Year Parade, Pride Weekend, etc. cost S.F. big $$ too. "They" never do the smart thing, unless you call catering to every freak and nut and self-promoting their political careers the smart thing. Aggro? Yes, I do know what that's supposed to mean, it's just a comment on your lazy language skills.

Re: Hawaii next America's Cup venue?

Actually the ideal location is Lake Havasua, Arizona. Plenty of gin and tonic bars in nearby resorts for all the AC owners, crewman, captains and sponsors to recover from their strenuous and tiring work on the water. And a steady 5-8 kt of wind, perfectly suited conditions for America Cup's eminently unseaworthy boats to sail in. Nice sunsets, golf courses, easy drive to Vegas, perfect sea state' and what about those temps rising off the desert! What's not to like?

Plus, no risk of canceling open day ceremonies or race series on the water because the boats couldn't go sailing in 20 knots of wind with two foot seas. ( I was there when this actually happened in SF last summer) poor little rich kids couldn't go out and show off because the weather was more than their pricy little toy yachts could manage. Didn't stop anybody else however, including the replica 130' schooner America, inch for inch a reproduction of the first winner of the Americas Cup, 100 years ago, deck loaded with 45 spectators, sailing to and fro across the Bay all afternoon - with nary a reef tied in to foresail or main!

So Lake Havasua - Bring It On!!! ITS AMERICAS CUP TIME AGAIN!!!!!

Nah.... Lake Mead is so low that Los Angelos says the rest of that water is theirs!! Lake Havasua will make a great looking golf course when they shut off the water.

They'll put the cup where ever it is that brings the most money.

I couldn't disagree more. I watched a few races on motoryachts with access to the VIP areas, and everyone would be in the saloon watching the race on the big-screen TV. This was made-for-TV racing at its finest. The times I took out my own sailboat to watch, I found it seriously disappointing.

Good riddance, as far as I'm concerned. It serves them right if they head to San Diego, where a windy day is anytime your flag waves. Meanwhile, I'm happy that the central SF bay once again becomes the domain of people who sail their own boats. Let the fat cats play elsewhere.

Not to mention the junkiest $30 T shirts and hats that a human could possibly design. hand made in a sweat shop in Nicaraga. For a peso a piece. Threw away the hat, and now wear my America's cup T shirt for paint and varnish work on an actual sailboat - my Alberg 30.
