That's about the same distance as crossing the lower
Chesapeake Bay up here but when I cross I use 1-4 tacks max usually.
Once however, I was about 25-30 miles North and while heading home early one morning these
boats started to appear on the horizon sailing at angles to the
wind which is a bit different since most cruisers coming from the North
motor against the Spring/Summer/Fall prevailing SW
Wind.
Anyway I guessed it might be the Annapolis-Bermuda
Race and as soon as I could make out one or two of the
boats, I knew that for sure.
First
boat I got close to actually won the
race according to PHRF rules. That was Tenacious a
Navy 44.
Another
boat was an Xp-44 with a rating of around 28.
This was early on a Saturday Morning. The race had stared the day before near
Annapolis and these guys had sailed/tacked the 140 miles or so all the way down the Bay that night and were about to make the turn for the ocean when I started seeing them.
I think the Jester Challenge is going to be starting from there in 2025 so if you enjoy that sort of thing.....
If interested, set the tracker below back to near the start of the race and checkout all the tacks these guys did just to get down the bay.
There were 4
navy 44's in the race. Usually manned by Naval Academy Cadets.
Btw, they will be doing this race again this Spring ...
