Genset Fuel Consumption

Thanks for the info provided on my other thread.

I am slowly working my way down to a tentative "leader of the pack". That boat features 3 AC units and a Generator - Onan 7KVA 220V/50Hz.

Obviously, it can only be an approximation, but what would such a genset's fuel burn be powering, say, 1 AC unit.

The boat is a 2013 Lagoon 400 S2 Owner's version. Any comments on that vessel would be appreciated as well.

Re: Genset Fuel Consumption

Just a reminder that CF has a dedicated Lagoon section :
Lagoon Catamarans - Cruisers & Sailing Forums

Lots of information about that model and more.

I have a smaller genset so can't help with your specific question on consumption.

Re: Genset Fuel Consumption

My similar Kohler 6.5 EFOZ burns roughly 0.4 liters/hour per 25% of capacity plus 0.7 liters per hour of overhead, with a small penalty if you run it near 100%. Your Onan will be very close to that or maybe exactly the same. 25% of capacity is about 1.6kW.

So running one AC unit will probably use about a liter per hour, and the compressor cycling on and off won't have much effect. In fact you might run two units without seeing a big difference in fuel consumption, because of the high overhead of this kind of genset.

Beware of running constant speed gensets all night to power air conditioning if it cools off and the a/c is mostly cycled off. They end up with polished bores that way.
