Galley Down and Store Bought Refrigerators (headache)

I'm trying to use all off the shelf, reasonably priced items that can simply be replaced when they wear out. It's part of the boat's design philosophy. Need front opening/upright as well. It currently has a Norcold n641 which is 7 cubic feet (200 liters) which includes a 3 cubic foot freezer and 5 cubic foot refrigerator. That's a propane fridge. Works perfectly and is in a perfect location. However, we are changing the galley location. Trying to move away from the propane so we don't need to go get it every couple months.

Girlfriend is shorter than average, so while I can reach something on the bridgedeck from the hull, she can't.

Already have one, as stated in the thread. Norcold N641. Runs on propane. Works great.

So I did play around with the floor, bridgedeck and counter/bench heights.

It doesn't work for our boat. No way to do what 44 did. The floor is already at the max height before I start hitting my head in the hull. Our bridgedeck is higher up than his. I have monstrous bridgedeck clearance.

So we had no choice but to locate a full size refrigerator/freezer at the top of the stairs going down into the galley. It's going to hang out over the hull a bit from the bridgedeck so you can hop up on a stair or two to get most simple things.

Dishwasher is going where 44's refrigerator is and we'll make due with a step stool for that. Not ideal, but very narrow hulls and huge bridgedeck clearance means interior stuff is hard.

john 61ct did make an excellent suggestion. You mentioned trips up and down if a large reefer is placed on the bridge deck. That may have the benefit of planning ahead such that it is not opened a frequently.

I'm confused. I saw dump your girlfriend, get a different boat and get an Engel.

While I like the guy, I'm not sure where some of these comments came from.

But yes, I agree it will lead to less opening of the refrigerator probably

Can you make 22" work? Liebherr has a series of narrow (24") full height and counter height units that are just under 22" deep, smallest that I know about. Otherwise a "shallow" fridge is a 24" "counter depth" unit.

Good luck, if you can fit one then a domestic unit is the only way to go (but you already know that).

Yep. They've been used on boats since at least the early 1980s. Check the forum to search for threads on that.

This one has been happily keeping ice cream frozen for 5 years now.

My new boat allows the use of " house hold " refrigerators. A good move , cheap , reliable and easy to replace when the time comes .

22 is still a little tight. Very narrow hulls with high bridgedeck. 55" at their absolute widest. Doors to other rooms in somewhat odd placements too, due to the plans.

I think we have little choice but to do the bridedeck. We did the whole layout rough sketch and real life mock-up using the dishwasher as a place holder for everything. Here's the result.

Agreed.

My entire fit out is making use of air based products (no through hulls below the waterline) and items you can easily replace.

After 30 years or so of boats, I know there's one thing that I don't like. It's "marine" products for interior stuff. And through hulls.

Not knowing your usage or battery capacity just don't over size. Another thing you may consider is getting rid of the heat. Water cooled pumps it over the side. Just a thought. In a norther climate it may be a plus?

They all draw about 300 kwh annually.

70 amp hours a day at 12v. Plus losses. My solar array should feed that without any issues. 1.4KW solar array.

Thanks for the thought on the waste heat. Hoping that between the ventilation and air conditioning it'll work out.

It's been a brain buster trying to figure this out.

Current galley is aft of amidships in a spot many boats have an aft stateroom and it all works perfectly. But not enough cooling or light back there. Girlfriend is dead set against it staying there.

Thoughts? Galley up is not an option. Too small.
