Fast Cruising Catamaran

After sailing with a monohull from Rotterdam-Stockholm, the monohull was a 65f. Even the owner of the mono said, never more a mono.

I want a fast and fun sailcatamaran.

So my list is like this without any order.

Outremer 55 Light (2000-2003)
Freydis 49 (used) Tournier have one Freydis 50 Race for sale now.
TS 50 (used, one for sale now)
Aerofleet 45 the new with roof, very light boat waiting for info from builder.

Did i miss any boat?

What is considered fast to you? Sailing fast...hmmm.... So i can sail in over 20 knots but can have a good average speed for a longer distance. Outremer - Catamaran Videos & Slide Shows The Samsara video with the outremer looks fun.

What other features do you like or dislike? Good help with radar, nav and autopilot. And so i can have a small dinghy back.

I will sail from sweden and to uk and also to the med. But mostly around uk. And also for some race....

This looks good. But is it fast, it weight 13 tons. How fast can it sail in 20-25 knots of wind???

The Switch line is intended to be a high performance cruiser. Very good average speeds while also maintaining some comfort and space. They aren't spartan. A Lagoon on steroids (same designers, actually). For real world information, contact: Welcome to Zia Later!

Yes, the Samsara video certainly does look like fun. But, in real world cruising, 20 knots of boat speed will be very hard to achieve for very long in a boat you can get for 350K euros. The reality is that you have a lot of stuff with you (after all, you're living on board), fast sailing like that puts a lot of stress on the boat and things (expensive things!) start breaking.

Outremer can get you there, but you have to keep them light and spartan. If you want a bit more comfort, then you will sacrifice some top-end speed. You can still get quite respectable averages.

I too am looking for a Cat, really leaning towards Outremer or perhaps a Catana. The Gunboat steering is just to strange, I like the vieww from an aft cockpit.

After going against the waves and the winds at the northsea on a mono, you want some protection..... And you dont want to go DOWN in the boat again....

This is a good thread. I've been meaning to ask about Bruce Numbers. I did a google search for them in CF and got a whole lot of the old catamaran arguement threads (which thankfully have diminished). How do you figure out the bruce number again?
And, do any of you recall a thread where bruce numbers where tabulated?

If there isn't one, maybe we can start one. I have the latest Cruising World "Catamarans by the Numbers" issue and could figure those out, then add from there.

You might be interested in Multihull Dynamics, Inc. - Home. Calvin (an engineer, of course!) analyzes all these numbers, and others, as well as explain the definitions and how they are derived. He will also run an analysis for a specific model, as well as hypotheticals. Costs some money, but if you're looking at a specific boat and performance parameters are important, it may be worth it for you.

I did that before I bought my St. Francis, since I was trying to figure out where it would sit on the performance vs. comfort compromise. It was worth it.

Have you looked in the advanced search engine of YachtWorld?

You can plug in price and type of boat (sail catamaran) and then see what is available on the market. It may not have exactly the boat you are looking for, but I think it may give you a good sense of what you can get for 350,000 Euro.

I like Chris White's Atlantics, there is a new 42mkII, also 46, 48, 55
You might also look at the Maine Cat 30 & 41. I think the stats on the 41 are close to Chris White's Atlantic 42.

If you want fast, also consider a tri, a used contour 50, or Hammerhead 54 will really fly.
