Drogues or sea anchor or neither

So where is the thread "Drogues or sea anchor or neither" gone?

Deleted? If so why?
Because a commercial member uses this forum to spread his FUD but can't answer three simple questions?

EDIT: I see that I'm down by some 30 posts, so the thread has been deleted.

Re: Drogues or sea anchor or neither

Haven't seen this thread before but surely the question depends on the type of sailing being undertaken (e.g. non-stop around the great capes or island-hopping on the milk run) and maybe to some extent the size of boat (small being likely at greater risk of pitchpole). Question seems far too general to answer.

Re: Drogues or sea anchor or neither

I have only used a sea anchor once during a NE gale while on passage from Labrador to Iceland. It was a large (26ft diameter when inflated) former navy cargo parachute and it worked a treat. deployed for about 28hours, lost only about 11miles, retireved when the wind went down and went positive. Sailing a 39ft, catamaran, about 19,000lbs displacement. Waves broke at the parachute with about 600ft of line, including about 30ft of chain. eating and sleeping was comfortable, curiously, hundreds of seabirds landed in the slick behind us as they took advantage of the flat water.

Deployed from the stern?

Recovered with a retrieval line?

Re: Drogues or sea anchor or neither

I deployed from the bow, with the line flaked out on the forward trampoline and payed out while hove-to, snubbing occasionally to keep all straight.
I buoyed the end with a 30ft. floating line with a buoyant fender at the end of the line. when retrieving, motored to catch the buoy with a boat hook and hauled in. It took a while to coil all up and the parachute was rinsed at the first first water shower I had in Iceland.

Re: Drogues or sea anchor or neither

For whatever reason, the haters come out in force whenever we set the record straight on the proper use of para-anchors and storm drogues. Maybe it’s because they have a specific agenda. Either to sell something, position themselves as an expert, or maybe they just believe strongly in their opinion and will do whatever it takes to be right.

This mentality actually hurts the forum, because most manufacturers refuse to post in fear of the haters excessive barrage of manipulative posts. It’s too bad, because true manufacturers spend a great deal of money testing their equipment and should know best how to install and use it.

Due to forum rules, service providers are limited in their ability to cite research, which can make it difficult to answer questions or support statements. Additionally, we aren’t always notified when there’s a new post.

Re: Drogues or sea anchor or neither

Seems to me to be a good topic given the carnage of the storms during the Golden Globe race.

And since the mono of Suzanne Huber-Curphy suffered no knock down or damage whatsoever using a JSD during the same storm in the same area as the GGR boats that got smashed, it would seem the JSD is the go to storm tactic.
