Really no different than on a mono. Blanket behind main and douse. Sock just makes it more convenient to gather in and easier if single/short handed.

A few minor advantages in a cat: more directionally stable off wind (especially in following seas), loads of foredeck space to work.

There were these:

It was IMPI who swears by his Tylaska T12 snap shackle on the tack.
$160 and compared to the price of repairing you damaged shute, pretty cheap!

As for my 2 cents of advise: The strategy used should be the same for light and heavy conditions so that it becomes routine avoids confusion and also should be well practiced using the light consditions to refine and perfect the strategy. As for dumping the sheet or the tack, my view is that when the wind is up and you are concerned about being over powered, you want to be dumping the tack, not the sheet, so it makes sense to me to do it that way every time. Always remember: KISS !

That's at least 3 cents worth of advice. Well said

Ah yes. I've used these on race boats. Makes perfect sense if your tack line goes all the way back to the cockpit.

2Wind, that was the thread. Thanks. I should be able to give it a shot in the next month.

Re: Dousing the Spinnaker on a Cat

I just ease the tack a bit, not let the whole thing run. Then pull the sock down, as it gets about midway the sheet can be eased. Once I've got the sock all the way down I pop the snap shackle on the tack and drop the whole thing through the hatch on the foredeck. The sock is awesome, no trying to gather armloads of sail into a turtle or bag.

Mono, not cat, but I don't see it would be much difference.

Re: Dousing the Spinnaker on a Cat

When we dump the tack with the main up the spinnaker invariably gets sucked back against the mast before I can get the sock over it. This would happen at every wind angle I tried. Maybe I'm just too slow, but we have found that a controlled release of the tack prevents this and works very well for us.

Hi, We are currently docked in Annapolis at a friends house but live and work on Kent Island, we'd love to talk to you about your ideas for spinnaker dousing before we head up to Newport later this week. Please give us a ring when you get chance, thanks, 443 223 4695 Steve & Bonnie Carroll
