Dorade Vents

What I don't really understand is the lack of Dorade vents on modern boats. In my early days of sailing in the 80s all the boats seemed to have them. While still uncomfortable inside at least there was some air moving.

I would think that in the tropics where most cats sail they would be a great benefit.

Why do we not see this type of ventilation in modern times?

Re: Dorade vents

only reason I can come up with is the extra manufacturing time needed, or modern lack of understanding of what they're for.

Re: Dorade vents

they look funny on modern boats, as the dorade box is spozedly made of teak and stands up and is in the way.
i donot know what it is in the new designs that leaves ventilation without -being addressed as many ports donot open in modern boats.

Re: Dorade Vents

It's a huge issue, particularly when at anchor.

I am installing dorades at some point before leaving. I am convinced that proper ventilation (obviously with a fully gasketed vent hole and the proper design that allows water taken in to drain) is not only the key to keeping a boat cool, but to keeping it warm and dry, as opposed to not so warm, but damp.

Plenty of discussion in this thread, with pictures: Ventilation and the bulletproof dorade - SailNet Community

A recent woodworker's take: Dorade Box Design & Build | Lord Nibbo’s Blog

Please note they certainly don't have to be wood.

Re: Dorade Vents

Those little solar nicro vents work pretty good too. On the down side they shut off after a few days of full clouds, but on the plus side you don't have to reposition cowls based on how you're lying to the wind.

The next vent I want to put in is an exhaust from the vberth, right smack dab in the overhead / foredeck. My staysail boom would never clear a dorade and I wouldn't want that much clutter up there.

Re: Dorade Vents

I have fitted four Air-Only Dorade ventilators to blow air into the hulls of my cat. In the aft cabins I have fitted two solar powered ventilators with batteries to extract the air.
I will be fitting two Plastimo Streamlined Dorade ventilators to extract air from my two forward cabins (including the heads) where I already have two venturi-type vents to produce incoming air.
Both the Air-Only and especially the Plastimo Streamlined dorade ventilators are modern looking, without square wood boxes.

Re: Dorade Vents

Boats these days are somewhat airier by means of several things. Larger Volume. Larger and more hatches- even over the loo. Solar vents, wind scoops etc.

I think designers have probably removed them for other reasons though. Less physical clutter on the deck being a primary one. (most modern cruisers are made with minimal clutter- some even have halyards etc running back to the cockpit through covered panels). All of this equates to less visual clutter meaning a greater area for the bikini girls to sip champagne.

None of which will stop you getting seasick underway when there is a lot of water coming over the deck.

I'm of the opinion they do it coz they can sell more boats at boat shows without them.

Honestly anything more than a daysailor should have dorade vents.

Neither will a Dorade. Or 50 dorades.

Agreed, its cos the boats look prettier without them

Re: Dorade Vents

Okay...kick starting this thread again because we just got sloshed on the head a number of times with nice cold water thru the dorades.

Our forward ones do not swivel (aft ones do) and they are big so let more of that green water in. I am considering making sunbrella covers before leaving the next port. Anyone had any luck with this idea helping to stop some green water ingress?

Another thought is to unscrew the little blighters turn them facing aft for the passage and screw em back later...thoughts???

Thanks Clare

Re: Dorade Vents

I have whittled some big wooden plugs for them that I put in if expecting a lot of spray over the decks. If blue water ever gets that high I'll be thinking more of survival than anything else! Most of the modern ones come with plugs but it doesn't seem the older ones ever had them. They are also a great way for critters to get in, so, have made screens for them as well. They DO vent better than the other useless mushroom gizmos on the cabin top.
