Docking/slip cost
Do most marinas charge double for a slip for a cat. In other words, a slip that normally takes in a monohull, is given to a cat, is the charge doubled. I would assume that an end or open side tie up wouldn't have this to consider.

I hear that a lot, but have never experienced it.

Re: Docking/slip cost
More like 1.5 times.
The biggest problem is there are more cats in Florida than wide enough slips, so finding one can be challenging at times.

Re: Docking/slip cost
@SandeeSeas,
Some places do. Some places they save the end ties for cats, but as the numbers increase, the marinas have to fit them in wherever they have the space. If there's not room for a skinny mono alongside, charging for two boats makes sense.

Re: Docking/slip cost
Double charge is very rare, some charge 30% more, others charge by length times beam for all boats, but most just by length

Re: Docking/slip cost
BTW, when assessing the answers to this question, try to determine which of the responses derive from multihullers, and which from monohullers. The observations thus garnered will be enlightening.

Re: Docking/slip cost
I'm a cat owner.
The main issue is you aren't going to get a 24ft, or 26ft wide cat into a typical 18' X 40', or even a 20' X 45ft slip.
That leaves the 60ft slips, T heads, or wide Cat slips in the few marinas that have them.
Each of these larger slips come with a surcharge. Usually not unreasonable considering you could put two monohulls in the same space.
Even when I had to occupy two slips, I wasn't charged double as not only did I get the multi slip discount, but they could still fit a small runabout, or sailboat in the remaining space, and recoup some cost.
And everything depends on supply, and demand... and negotiating skills.

Re: Docking/slip cost
Only when you really need to go into a marina. Always look relaxed when you arrive, look like you could just move on and then negotiate. Never book in advance and always negotiate. We have achieved cheaper berths than some monohulls much smaller than us.

Re: Docking/slip cost
Depends on the boat and the location.
We had a 14ft beam small cat and while it was suggested a few times, they always backed down when we asked for an explanation (eventually just told them a sail boat 34ft with 14ft beam and forgot to mention we were a cat). A few times, we even got into full marinas because our shallow draft allowed us to get into an otherwise unusable slip.
When you get up into the 25ft beam range, not many slips will accommodate it. That could mean you take up two full slips (if nothing is between the slips), a side tie or a slip for a 90ft monohull. Side ties sometimes cost nothing extra but if you take up 2 slips or have to go into a much larger slip, you are likely to get hit up for the space you are taking up.
