Is it mandatory to have a captains licence to sail ?
Or is this only when carrying passengers?

In the US only when carrying passengers for hire. Some state may require a state education certificate. In NFLD I doubt it but ask the RNYC in St John. Members will know for sure. A friendly lot they are.

As you're in Canada, you'll need at minimum a PCOC ( pleasure craft Operators Card) its a pretty basic standard. pretty much if you can figure out that the pointy end is called the bow, you'll pass no problems!

I have my pleasure craft operation card
I have my level one sailing course completed
Doing my level 2 this summer and taking some navigation training as well, hope to work my way into some coastal sailing in the next couple of years
