If the OP has an EHIC then she or she is in the EU or Switzerland
The. EHIC , the successor to the E111 , isn't obligatory, but if you are qualify for an EHIC, then I see no need for any further
insurance in general ( see below) in some countries like
France , doctors and dentists vists are only reimbursed to 70% whereas hospitals are 100 %. . You often have significant cash flow issues as you typically pay and reclaim and the reclaim can take a while.
If you have potentially elective surgery issues or specific
medical issues then extending your Private insurance is a good idea. Taking out a fully private insurance is not particularly expensive , ( about £100 a month ) but a lot of this duplicates the free EHIC.
Unless I was very old or had a chronic illness , I'd simply use the EHIC. its what I use.
