Do any liveaboard cruisers carry health Insurance?

Dear Multihull Community in the Mediterranean carry health Insurance in conjunction to the obligatory E111? My wife and I intend to cruise the western Med. sometime in next couple of years and wondered about all the multihull and Monohull sailors out there already living the dream or the nightmare? Can anyone please give us feedback good an bad.Any companies offering such at good rates and service and any cowboys to be aware of? Chris & Catharine

I don't see how the question would be specific to mono- or multi-hull sailboats... or even to sailboats vs. power...

FWIW, we have health insurance, run a powerboat... but we're not in the western Med, so maybe not useful...

I think this a testy question for all Americans...floating or not! Seems to be at the very crux of their social fabric. Peculiarly, access to free child education, all the way up to 18 yrs old, whether one needs, wants, uses or cares about it....doesn't seem to be an issue! Gotta shake one's head....

If the OP has an EHIC then she or she is in the EU or Switzerland

The. EHIC , the successor to the E111 , isn't obligatory, but if you are qualify for an EHIC, then I see no need for any further insurance in general ( see below) in some countries like France , doctors and dentists vists are only reimbursed to 70% whereas hospitals are 100 %. . You often have significant cash flow issues as you typically pay and reclaim and the reclaim can take a while.

If you have potentially elective surgery issues or specific medical issues then extending your Private insurance is a good idea. Taking out a fully private insurance is not particularly expensive , ( about £100 a month ) but a lot of this duplicates the free EHIC.

Unless I was very old or had a chronic illness , I'd simply use the EHIC. its what I use.

Re: Do any liveaboard cruisers carry health Insurance?

I used Topsail Topsail Insurance for the time that I lived aboard. Less than 1000GBP for worldwide coverage for two of us for a year. Much less than that if you keep away from the USA.

No idea what they are like if you claim as we never had to make a claim.
