DIY Lagoon 400 bottle screw replacement?

Greetings CF members.

The time has come to replace the bottle screws on our 2013 Lagoon 400. Why replace? I need to tighten the rig but the bottle screws are completely locked up, and so far no amount of penetrating oil and/or leverage has been able to break them free. Yes, I will exercise & lubricate the new ones regularly, but my immediate concern is whether to hire a rigger or not. I feel like I can replace them safely one side at a time (stabilizing the mast with the main halyard, topping lift, jib halyard, and 2 spin halyards all winched tight), but I’m willing to be convinced that hiring a rigger would be worth the money.

Thanks in advance for sharing your opinions.

Bill

Here's the page out of the Lagoon 400 manual that deals with the process. Are you confident that you can end up with the mast having the right rake and the shrouds having the right tension?

DIY Lagoon 400 bottle screw replacement?

I just did my lower shrouds solo, first time for me. I also had frozen turnbuckles, both sides. The critical step is pulling out the first clevis on a rig that you cannot loosen.
Get superlube also.

Hey Tami! Yes this is the same Bill! Looks like you still have a Catana—same one?

Hey!

Yes, same boat. Moved aboard Nov 2016 full time.

But I thought you were selling BV? So you were able to bring her back across?

As to the question, you can do it if you get enough tension with the halyards such that you can either push the pin out… or cut the bottle screw

I take it you are replacing the shrouds, since your turnbuckles are seized? You might as well.

Given that, is it worth your time? Might as well hire a rigger. It just gets to the point where if the project is big enough, and if you are still working, let the rigger deal with it, know what I mean?
