Diesel vs Gasoline?

My wife and I are planning on retiring to a catamaran, and I just had a bit of a thought.

I have always been considering something in a 35-40 ft length, and figured diesel engines were the way to go.

Now, I am wondering about starting with a smaller boat, like 34 ft, and I see many of them are powered with gasoline outboards.

So, what are the advantages/disadvantages to each?
