depth of 43L (Leopard 43 Catamaran)

Hi all,

Fairly new here, we just purchased a 43L, and need to find the depth not draft for the CG simplified measurements form. The problem is our boat is out of the country and we are still in the US. Trying to get her registered asap.

Anyone out there have a leopard 43 and know your depth?

What's a 43L. What's the dfference between "depth" and draft? Presumably, it's depth is zero if it's still floating :0

the depth measurement for USCG documentation is the height of just the cabin structure from the deck. Maybe Google for some line drawings or study plans from Lagoon. Or get a really clear photo, measure the known dimensions and scale from that.

Looks like in the case of a cat, tri, or pontoon 'D' it is the vertical from bottom to top of hull.

If someone can post a side view* I can take a plink at the measurement.

*not finding a side view for a 43L online...

that would only be for something like a pontoon boat or similar. if there's any buoyancy in the connecting superstructure they just need the cabin height from the shear. yeah, I know, weird. they have a strange formula for calculating tonnage also.

You should be able to discern from these data specs and by proportional measurement from the side view. At least close enough for government work, a.k.a. the USCG.

Round to the nearest cubit and call it good. FYI: A cubit, noun, approximately equal to the length of a forearm. It was typically about 18 inches or 44 cm, though there was a long cubit of about 21 inches or 52 cm.

If it is a late 2000 Leopard 43 sailboat, it is 4' 3". I don't know about the new L43 power boat.

The poster stated that he has a "Leopard" not a Lagoon.

Section 6. of the fillable (it calculates the GRT for you) PDF version of USCG Form CG-5397 clearly indicates that the measurement for "depth" for a catamaran is from the bottom of the hull (that would be the part that hits bottom first) to the main deck.

have you thought of contacting leopard ?

btw 'depth' of a vessel is defined as "The depth is measured at the middle of the length, from the bottom of the keel to the top of the deck beam at the side of the uppermost continuous deck."

a simple way of looking at it is draft + freeboard
