Curved Dagger Board ?

Dear Multihullers,
What does the arched or curved boards do on these large racing cats and the cup boats? As the board gets horizontal does it create a hydroplane effect? What is the design intent of this? Just wondering, I am a retired Hobie 17 sailor, I love the direction the cup is going.

thanks

L

The idea is the horizontal portion will provide lift on the leeward hull counteracting the leaning tendency as well as reducing wetted surface. It helps the boat sail flatter and in a sense lighter since the low side isn't forced down into the water.
