Maybe the 1160 guys can chime in. If you are trying to pull the luff down by hand in a blow is there someway to reach it? Is the boom low enough for you to reach the luff, because it doesn't look like you can reach it standing on the coach roof.

Also, are there reefing hooks for the tack? so you can have the reef properly secured. Would these be easily reachable?

Using flip out mast steps for these things is not ideal. Always get sore calves after struggling tip toed on those things.
You dont need mast steps, you can easily stand on saloon roof and reach every part of the mainsail on 1260/1160. And I have never needed to pull one down, the roller bearing batt cars mean the faill into the bag easily. Reefs are single line managed from cockpit. No need to leave cockpit to reef boat.

Reef 1 is permanently rigged. Reef 2 has snap shackles for the luff and leach attachment. That single line reef system is easily moved up to the reef 3 attachment points, but not when the sh*t hits the fan. I understand from a friend that just ordered an 1190, that you can spec a dedicated line third reef. With our two-chice system, when we are crossing the Gulf, at night we pre-rig reef 1 and reef 3. Luckily we have not had to go to reef 3 yet. That said, with the electric winch and single reef line system, it is easy and controlled to reef either.

Some owners have added boom blocks to have dedicated lines for all three reefs. Its not a significant mod.

Cool, I'm 183cm(6'ish?) so I was hoping I could reach it standing at the mast base, standing on the roof you are pulling at an angle. Anyway, I'll need to charter it and see how it works.

I think one of the 1190s in Australia has either all of the reefing or just the 3rd reef at the mast. Might not be a bad idea if you want to secure the reef cringle with a hook or something at the mast anyway. I understand the reluctance with having a 3rd reef is the amount of lines required for single line reefing.

Here is a diagram. If its not too much off it seems I would need to be at the base to secure the cringle to a hook, could possibly pull the luff down to first reef as well at the base. But as the sails stack up, by the 3rd reef I will probably need to be on the roof.

I find myself at the mast a lot pulling at stuff on the boats I've been on. Granted they might not have had roller bearing cars. However I think having good access to the luff and reefing cringles without straining yourself is a safety issue in any kind of blow.

My thinking is reefing or dropping a sail in a moderate breeze facing into the wind is all well and good but what if you are caught going down wind with the main up and had to reef. Maybe you can still crank the reefs in slowly assuming nothing breaks but the last panels will still be loaded and need to be pulled down by hand, then you need to secure the tack at the mast.

One of the great thing about living in San Francisco is you can simulate some pretty rough conditions with pacific rollers coming in and winds at 30 knots, but still be able to motor back into Sausalito if **** really hits the fan.

Nope, all reefing done from cockpit. no going to mast at all, but if you do, easy to stand at mast base and on roof to be above boom goosneck. But to reiterate, No need to leave cockpit to reef.

Re: Considering new Seawind 1260

We are scheduled to pick our 1260 up next March.

Straight choice comfort and performance plus those specific positives you mention, or luxurious space and forgo performance (not just speed).

Also cost, enabled us to buy new rather than second hand.

Had a few test sails and we love it. I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but we think she’s super sexy.

The two of us will live aboard and travel the world. We will of course have family and friends but there is more than enough room for all. We have the owners version that has 3x2 berths below and can comfortably sleep at least another two in the saloon.

Nicely balanced between open saloon to rear seating area at the stern and a huge foredeck area.

Hope this helps.

Re: Considering new Seawind 1260

Have read this thread several times- amazingly helpful all things seawind. We live West Coast US (PNW) and feel it’s time to contact either Seawind or regional sales group. Our preference is to work directly with Seawind but not clear this is an option. Any thoughts or suggestions on making initial contact?

Not Sure where on the west coast you are but Wright Yachts in Seattle have been terrific to work with. My boat will be here in May.

Super helpful - exactly the info we were hoping for - Many thanks -
And congrats on the 1370 - Sounds like there are a few new SWs headed to the PNW.

Re: Considering new Seawind 1260

Seawind doesn't sell direct from factory. In the US there are dealers that cover specific regions. If you take delivery in the US, they will also handle offload, commision, and any warranty work and followup.

No, I'm not a dealer. But I did take delivery of a new Seawind last year, plus know a few other owners and dealers.

From the same designer that did the 1370. Make the helm more seawindesque and we have a new 1260. Seawind did say they have things in the pipeline. I think the straight front windows has it's advantages.

Still on your one-man crusade to have Seawind replace their current 1260, that was introduced thee years ago, and has strong sales? The boat youve linked to has a different hull, different deck, ... That would be an expensive change, to start over with new molds. Also, talk to owners of 1160s and 1260s, and one of their favorite features is the large front-opening windows.

To me, this looks more like a Leopard than a Seawind. I expect to see the reverse bow show up on the other Seawind models. They've already made that change on the 1600. I will probably be proven wrong, but their five-model lineup seems to cover the spectrum well. IMO
