Composting toilets?

Wondering why I’m not seeing a lot more composting toilets on cruisers? I’ve installed several in vans and boats and they seem to be well loved by anyone who has converted. Yes they are a little weird but not really and they just seem to work wonderfully, and they eliminate black water. The wet heads on boats seem to be a constant source of headache and breakdowns, so why not convert to composters?

Do a search and you will find hours of reading on this subject, no need to start a new thread.

Re: Composting toilets?

Lots of threads, and lots of cruisers using them. There have even been a couple of surveys done over the years here (by me). They show a surprising number of people using them.

Sorry I thought it was a discussion forum.
It’s more about me wondering if I’m missing something wonderful about wet flush or whatever else is the Current state of the art. Or maybe black water isn’t as terrifying as I believe it is.
Maybe I’ll luck out and someone will come along who likes talking abojt their boat. Unlikely though.

What do you want to talk about? I'm always game for another composting discussion. It's only a matter of time before the folks who've never owned one, but know they hate them, come in. And then the sparks fly.

For those of us who have been here for more than three weeks, the topic comes up about once a month and is becoming tiresome.

But I'll help you out, here you go:

SV Welder, it will be enlightening to read the very old posts as well as the newer ones. This will show a change in the perception of what a composting toilet is and and possible benefits.

A lot of fireworks as well. Occasionally a real s#!t storm.

Maybe it's time to run another survey. I've run two here over the years, each one showing a significant percentage of respondents using composting heads. It's been a few years now. I bet the numbers are even higher now.

Composting toilets?

Bought our first composter in 2006. Since then we have owned 5 other boats and removed the old holding tank system on each and installed a composter. Only way we would go back to the old holding tank system is if regulations dictated it.
The vast majority of those that have composting toilets have also owned a holding tank system.
The vast majority of those that “poo-poo” the idea of a composter, have never owned a composter, so have no experience.

And those same people will complain about putting dried out poop in a bag and then putting into a dumpster as being bad,........ but advocate going a few miles offshore and pumping their poop directly into the ocean.

Let that sink in for a minute. Literally........

My home has a real composting toilet, the system used on boats does not compost, I can use the product from my home in the vegetable garden, you throw yours in a dumpster. The “composting” toilet for boats is just a convenient way to get around the no dump laws in the USA, I am in Canada and dump away from shore as required.
