Like others here, my preference is to
work the
sails, halyards, etc, from alongside the base of the
mast.
Call me old fashioned (and that's ok, 'cuz I am an old fart), but this so much simpler than having a plethora of lines lead back into the
cockpit.
On my
Beneteau there is often a veritable spaghetti of lines laying around in the
cockpit, under my feet on the seats, or dangling down the
companionway steps, etc. If they weren't color coded, I'd have no idea what was what. At night, all this gets compounded by a lack of light.
I get that it keeps you in the cockpit, but for me, it's no big deal, and actually preferential to
work alongside the
mast.
