Afaik, home built boats do not need CE if owned by builder for several years before selling them on.

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects

Dazcat is in the UK So no need for CE on a second hand boat, in the UK never has been.
CE would apply on a new product and only applies as built and installed.

Just found a few guys on youtube who took a freebie cat , cut out the rot with a chainsaw and replaced it w 2x4's and plywood (maybe marine but i doubt it) and are coastal cruising and having a blast.

Oh it is absolutely going to sink or fall apart but meanwhile..theyre having a blast

I almost bought this boat some years ago - she is "basic", but I still wish I had done so.

For general information, she was built for/by Mike Butterfield in 2002.
She competed in the 2002 RWYC 2-handed round Britain race - finished 11th out of 18 finishers.
2003 Fastnet Dazzle 2nd out of 4 on corrected time and in Fastnet 2005 2nd out of 7 on corrected time.

Sadly Mike passed at home in May 2021 aged 89, but had been sailing actively until at least 2019.

That is sad to hear I was wondering what had happened but put the lack of news down to Covid. He was a fine fellow and had an (un) enviable reputation for flipping cats, Rosie I believe and then Dazzler, but always shrugged it off and was racing again before anybody really noticed. RIP

1996 custom 49'

It's only $149,000 which is kinda cheap and it's also a project so it's a good fit for this thread. In Florida.

Only 149k - I only paid 14.9k for my ready to go CAT 😂 admittedly only 25ft
although agree a good fit in the thread.
Is that 140hp in a CAT plus 10kW Gen
Does it still move? With 2 x 25hp she would be flying!
A good size though slipping nicely under the regulation class change at 50ft

50ft does seem to be the threshold for lots of extra fees and regulations. Over 50ft in Australia is a big issue.

15m in metric countries - generally more hoops to jump through for registration and possibly more for licensing. What are the extra costs in Australia?

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects

When I last visited albeit a few years ago now there was certainly a requirement for ridiculous levels of pollution insurance for boats over 15m.
Maybe it was revoked it was very controversial at the time.
