For a gemini with a
single outboard, a 140lb 40-hp tohatsu 2-stroke is about max if keeping it sensible. Of course a new 20hp Suzuki efi around 107lbs would (to me, as to most people on a sailing forum) be a much better choice. Despite the "floating condo" reputation, it's still a sailboat... Yes I suppose someone could beef up- then redesign- the
outboard mount to handle more weight. Some non-sailors still call for more & more hp, but the weight distribution will seriously suffer. With that weight so far back I'd try to keep it well under 200lbs - maybe Tohatsu 60hp (with a custom
motor mount) at around 215lbs if you're ferrying tourists back and forth, or something,.. I think 90hp would have very little speed gain over 50-60hp. And 90hp = ~350lbs, too much, you practically would have to add "ballast" to the bow to balance the boat.
