I can't stop thinking about this boat, do you guys think this would be a suitable singlehand performance cruiser. He's currently flying a Catalina 320 mainsail so the rig seems not overly large, should be no problem singlehanded.

I emailed Derek Kelsall to ask what he thinks and his feelings on if a bigger rig would even work. I'm not sure that would be in the budget though. I'd love to get rid of that back cabin for extra cockpit space and just use a tiller and put the outboard on the transom.

I don't really think I'd be up for building a boat from scratch but this could be a little bit less of a project while still be a very satisfying endeavour.

I was told that it cost about $10,000 for the new mast and rigging on my 34' Crowther. Actually that was why I really liked the boat. The boat had a smaller mast prior to that. The boom was a used racing boom. The sails were used but some were hardly used at all. There were 7. I'm not sure if the sails were included in that price. A new proper sized rig and sails might be $20,000 but then you're talking high performance like it was made for. Used masts are always for sale so you can get that price down some.

The Kelsall looks like it's been cleaned up & sorted out a bit since the current owner picked it up couple years ago. It doesn't look like it's necessarily been hauled out. I don't see any reason to speculate about a bigger rig until you've sailed it. One area to pay attention is the alloy crossbeam bolts and attachment points. It's possible & likely they haven't been apart in many years. But if you do find corrosion, new aluminum beams wouldn't be prohibitively expensive. To me looks like a solid contender- the usual advice applies, even for a diy type person, survey more than likely worth it. A 40ft tri has a lot of surface area so things like paint & minor deck repairs here&there can take a lot more time than you might expect. Always love those mast (ladder)steps, personally I'd try to keep the mast and get a set of new or used sails. Find a used high roach main, or get a new set of sails & just optimize/modernize it with what you have to work with..

“Part of a bulkhead and some flooring replaced due to moisture ingress” - I’d steer clear of this one. A soggy boat is bad enough, but one that has structural issues is a big fix. Wiring and elecs will also need sorting due to corrosion, and if it’s been left alone long enough to accrue that sort of damage, my guess is a whole lot else might need swapping out as well...

It's not my cup of tea, but if you have the skills to fix it up, it might be worth it to somebody. I've been rebuilding a boat I shouldn't have bought, so take my advice with a huge grain of salt.

Haha I hear you! Spent 6 years completely rebuilding a soggy steel ketch, and then a year rebuilding a soggy 42ft catamaran. Next one is definitely not going to be soggy!

I am having trouble copying pics from YW which I used to be able to do. Right clicking doesn't give me a copy option. A screen shot only converts to text which is then too long. Is there something I am missing?
