Cheap Multis and Projects

I think perhaps the price is high but impossible to tell without going to look at the actual condition.


Outboard/s for a large tri is not necessarily a bad setup, of course most would prefer single diesel which would probably end up lighter weight... The advantage of outboards is relatively cheaper/easier repairs, maintenance, & replacement cost. dual outboards could pivot a large tri into tight spaces, like having bow thrusters. and with 2, nice to have a backup...



as mentioned 50ft of tri is a LOT of boat surface to paint, repair, etc. the cost goes up exponentially. I wouldn't consider any similar boat a realistic "1 man" project except for the rare truly dedicated boatbuilder w/ the right experience, TIME, and money.. I think you realistically need a full "team" to be successful with a large project multihull like this.



the big thing to keep in mind with a boat like this (50ft tri) is the "unknown" design = hard sell. prepare for a possible long time on the market when you want to unload it. Cat's are a little more in demand/pricey in the large sizes but still a significant price cut for an "unknown" design.



It's a short-sighted move by the original builder to be sure. There are (and were even in the 70's & 80's) so many proven designs of all sizes.



Of course it could be that after a survey/etc the seller might listen to offers of half the 60k. A couple big project tri's I've seen over the last few years, (asking price) 52ft tri tampa/cuba 30k, there are photos and prbably meention of it in this thread etc, had red & white striped undersized mast (a lot rougher shape and also needed rig), 60ft piver 75k panama (loaded down with big deckhouse and a lot of gear etc but needed refit) 55ft cross very rough shape 45k(?). recent ugly duckling 52ft tri schooner on ebay (looked like monohull with training wheels) 8-9k. On the other end of the spectrum Virgin Fire (gold coast 56ft, also outboard powered sold for only about 85k(?) not too long ago in fairly good shape (not a project). Many more options if you go down to 45ft.. There just aren't enough comparable boats out there in the size range.

Holy sh*t! That’s a serious bit of kit!!! I guess it’s stil for sale as it’s a toy, and to turn it into a liveaboard cat (or something with a closed bridgedeck) would take quite a bit of work and some serious amounts of carbon, so as not to mess with the displacement too much.

In saying that, if you just wanted a weekend laugh, that’s awesome.

$500k for a new Neel 47 tri, so this guy’s asking about 10% of the price. I’d call that a cheap multi😉

Here's a 37' Polycon cat for $20,000. This company was started by Buddy Ebsen who was one of the early multi pioneers. It is a project.

Buddy Ebsen was a long-time sailor, who lived for over 20 years at 530 Sth Bay Front on Balboa Island in Newport Harbour. Apparently the house was previously owned by Shirley Temple, and subsequently by Joey Bishop. It was custom built for Ebsen in '65 but demolished after being sold in 2015.

The original was designed by Rudy Choy for Ebsen, who called it 'Polynesian Concept' (nicknamed 'Polycon') because Rudi kept banging on about the difference between "the European concept and the Polynesian concept" of ocean voyaging and ocean craft design. The boat was built by Alfred Kumalae and Warren Seamen.

I wasn't aware that Ebsen went on to make a series, but I was pretty sure the original was only 35' (checked my autographed copy of his book 'Polynesian Concept' and that's correct. Original was 35'. Won Multihull Transpac Race in 1968. Smallest boat in the fleet that year.
