Re: Cheap Multis and Projects

The argument is really aft cockpit vs center cockpit which can be debated over and over again. Horstman used both. Jim Brown laid out his argument pretty darn well in 'the case for the cruising trimaran'.... The searunner "large" center cockpit shouldn't be (isn't) a liability in any sea conditions - it has a huge drain (centerboard trunk) and is as far from the ends of boat as possible. Horstman has designs with a small aft cabin (center cockpit, and "large" center cockpit on the larger designs), .... see 36ft Horstman project boat for sale in CA: https://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/boa...097255950.html (boat looks a little rough, I don't have any knowledge of it or construction method etc)>

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects

Another advantage of the SeaRunner centre cockpit is that the main mast comes down into the cockpit, so all mainsail reefing etc is done for the safety of the cockpit - no going out on the deck.
Guess that works for all centre cockpit vessels - and probably some of the modern cats with 'forward cockpits' - though I sure as **** would not want to be in one of those in a blow, copping every wave in the face

Yeah, exactly about the Searunners, however i have seen center cockpit vessels that you have to go forward to the mast. The Searunner series is the only vessel that i have ever seen where you can do the mast work from the cockpit.

In terms of tris, I agree, but my point was that some of the modern breed of cats have a cockpit forward of the saloon that is at the base of the mast, so sail handling would be fine in those, but being right at the forrard end of the bridgedeck would make for a wet ride in a blow, in those cockpits...
Bad enough in a Searunner, without a dodger of some sort...

Personally, while Jim Brown's Searunners show some inspired design, I find the cockpits with the mast and a big wheel in the cockpit unappealing.... There is no space to get around.......... at least that's the way it looks, having never been on one The SR31 has the mast forward, and a tiller..... I like that better really. Not all the clutter in the cockpit. The huge centerboard trunk takes up a lot of interior space, but forms a major structural element in the boat, which is well thought out, and it makes sense to have the cockpit directly over this both as a drain, and for intelligent utilization of space. With a good hard dodger and a bimini, and side curtains, the cockpit can become a very nice elevated living area that when open offers a tremendous all around view and pretty good all round access. In all he made some pretty good design choices....not perfect, but well thought out. But boats are like airplanes..... which are often described as a flock of compromises flying in close formation.... or something to that effect.

Owly: if you keep your cash handy you should be able to pick up a bargain as this depression works its way thru the system.

I saw this one which sounds like it partially sank at launch. But it's a 49' cat for $44,000.

Just a quick glance at that pic and I can maybe guess why it sank. I mean, we need a few good mono guys to jump in here. Would never buy a multihull that could sink.

The german didn't translate perfectly, something about losing steering and hitting a barrel in the river. It does look like there was a fair amount of work put into the cat and it was brand f^*king new.

Lovely woodwork........ cedar strip all the way up! Still it looks like living in a culvert! Those beams are a bit of a nuisance....... I wonder why anybody would do that? It's not a boat I'd want.

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects

Actually, there is a fairly accurate English description in the add:

"First watering in May 2019.“ This boat was manufactured by a professional boat builder. During the transfer, the cat collided with a fairway barrel in the Rhine after a rudder failure. There was a leak below the starboard hull with water ingress, the cat sank over the starboard bow. The boat was lifted with a floating crane and towed into the port of WSV Maxau and professionally sealed by the shipping office. Despite the ingress of water, the Kat is in very good condition, almost as new as before the catastrophe. An overhaul is necessary. The two motors must be replaced by two outboard thrust motors. The entire navigation electronics must be replaced. Both masts and trees are intact on the deck. With an investment of approx. € 20.000,- the catamaran is in the same condition as before the accident. So there is a great chance here for a practically new 15m Kat, which can be restored with manageable effort."

A local radio station had an article on the incident:

https://www.regenbogen.de/kategorie-...-zu-sinken?amp

another media outlet had this:

https://www.tag24.de/nachrichten/kar...rettet-1181114

Looks like she did partially flood when hitting a groin, after coming adrift following a rudder failure...

Re: Cheap Multis and Projects

Actually looks like a nice boat to me. Gives you a chance to take out those green monsters and put in proper beta engines. Such a deal for a 15m boat - 44K US. Maybe prices are coming down already?

"Sank" means different things to different people. In this case it means that the starboard bow was submerged, not that the boat actually sank.
