You are right, there are not many. I have seen one Looping 50 with dagger boards and several Freydis 46 and 49.

Another one: Mumby Cyber 48 aluminium cat.

The older Geminis had centerboards.

HH for sure, and a couple of the others as well, offer either daggerboards or mini keels. Though in the case of HH daggerboards come with a performance package that costs a third more than the mini keels version. Ouch.

Re: Cats with Dagger Boards?

I believe Chris White had a few Cat designs built with boards.

Out of the specs, Witness Cats, a lock Crowther design, have them too (mid 80's).

Re: Cats with Dagger Boards?

Dagger boards are fun!

I had plenty of fun removing and installing the big dagger board on my vessel. The smaller one in the rear was even more fun. Seems a stainless steel bolt fell down into the housing and jammed it for good. Days and days of effort trying to knock it out and saw it out to no avail. I finally cut off the top of the board and glassed in the floor. It became a fixed dagger board that extended only about 2.5 ft below the hull.

After all the fun I had with my dagger boards I would think long and hard about buying a cruising vessel with them.

I do think they are great for racing, however, a fixed dagger board on a cat that allows you to beach it and clean the bottom sounds very tempting to me.

About a foot of the dagger board is already installed in the photo below. I estimate it weighed in at about 350 lbs.

Including the double walled housings to fit the two dagger boards on my vessel I think the total weight of the boards and housings must have approached 0.75 tons.

Re: Cats with Dagger Boards?

Why daggerboards ? Will you be racing ? If not , go with LAR keels. They’re so much more convenient. Storage on the hard anywhere in the world is a breeze as you won’t need a dolly . Dry out between tides to clean the bottom. Sure they’re a little slower than a daggerboard design but seriously, if you’re not racing , why sacrifice all the LAR benefits to get an extra knot?

Never mind a knot more or less, pointing higher is the reason for me, boards just cut deeper in more stable water. Schionning Wilderness...

Would you like a 46ft Schionning launched 2007 currently on the Queensland coast? I’m going to the dark side with a power cat! Rog from FerrariSailing

It’s not about the extra knot, that’s silly. I expect there’s very few points of sail where a daggerboard cat is faster than a same design mini keel cat, without all the other changes to a design that accompany daggerboard vs keel.

As an example, the HH44 offers identical hulls shapes with either mini keels or daggerboards, but the performance difference with the daggerboard option is a function of all the additional performance features, not just the foils. https://www.hhcatamarans.com/hh44

But, daggerboards do have two real-world advantages over fixed keels:
1) enable the boat to point better upwind due to more efficient foil shape
2) enable the boat to surf sideways when hit by a beam-on breaking wave, reducing the risk of wave-induced capsize

Regarding drying out, absolutely it’s less convenient with daggerboards - we need to be very sure the bottom is soft before we go somewhere to dry out. But it’s still possible.

What exactly are “all the LAR benefits”?

He doesn't want it until 2007-2032 so a new Balance should be fine.
