Catana 42 Weight capacity

I am considering buying a Catana 42 2014, family of 4. Does anyone have experience of weight carrying capacity before adversely affecting sailing performance. Cannot find any published info Thanks

The CE plate on the boat should indicate designed maximium load, that at least is your starting point, subtract from that the lightship displacement then you have your net maximum load in terms of people, gear, additional equipment, toys provisions etc.

What is considered a reasonable net maximum load for a cat around this size?

find out factory max load and divide by 2. Then honestly calculate what you will take with you in weight. If you get over that, you may as well but major brand and forget speed dreams.

If you load it to max, your speed potential will be mediocre and modestly loaded Lagoon 400 will get you for breakfast

Agree, on our L450 we left same time as an overloaded Catana 42, it was covered in toys, its sterns were down, had a big dinghy, pushbikes kayaks and other stuff (then so did we), it was blowing about 15 knots, He had full sail up and we had one reef (expecting it to blow harder) distance 30 miles it was a tight reach (too tight for the gennaker). After 1/2 an hour we were in front about 1/2 a mile, wind went up only a couple of knots. According to radar he was slowly catching us. So we rounded up into the wind and shook out the reef, and he arrived in harbor an hour after us. It is so much fun when that happens. Carry capacity of a L450 5 - 6 Tonnes, on a C42 I am guessing about 2.5 T

Don't forget water and fuel weight in that calculation. Those are big numbers.

Re: Catana 42 Weight capacity

Catana 42 sails much better then cruising cat. But just be reasonable on weight (not full tanks) sensible dinghy, get rid of anything not used. If cruising Caribbean, USA, Europe only need minimal spares. Do you want a performance sail or cruise. Nautitech only real volume catamarans in-between ( no centreboard).

Re: Catana 42 Weight capacity

I know that their earlier C43 was a bit more forgetting - just compare their tankage and displacement and you will see what I mean.

You sure 43 is no good for you?

A friend who had a slightly bigger one (471) told me that it is fine to load 15% of the dry displacement before you sense any difference in handling.

This is the data from the CE Plate:

Categorie A = 8 pax + luggage = 840kg

Categorie B = 10 pax+ luggage = 900kg

Categorie C = 12 pax + luggage = 1020kg

Categorie D = 14 pax + luggage = 1120kg
