Perhaps a couple of video's would add credibility to your own statements.

i sail very conservatively, nearly always over reefed. And we both like it. As I sail, notice other boats sometimes staying behind. Either they do not have clean bottom or they are overweight or both. Just saying.

Re: Catamarans in 50kt winds
IMO there are a lot more videos we have all taken of sailing in heavy weather and then after reviewing them in port find the conditions don't look all that bad. Time after time you will have someone post "Well, the camera flattens out the waves" or something along those lines. I have done it myself, seen it with my own videos.
It may be true to a certain extent but probably to a greater extent the conditions just were not as bad as we felt they were in the moment. It's like the video in post 449. I'd guess from the still water shots the wind is really blowing at 25, maybe a gust hit 35. 20' waves? - more like 10. You can see that with many rescue videos from helicopters as sailors are getting winched off their boats. Watching them I wonder "Why are you getting off that boat".
That is why I again can say that the video of the Leopard sailing in the Southern Indian ocean is the best representation of true heavy weather sailing. The waves do look that big, the wind action on the water does look that strong, and the crew are handling it brilliantly.

I dunno mate. I reckon you've either got the fastest Lagoon 400 ever built or you're gun sailor. I'd love to see video of you at it so I can learn from you

How fast is an OPB compared to a Lagoon 400? Do you take her out often? If so, I'd love to see some video of that.

1. I reckon my main OPB is faster - it's a Sydney 41. So would the one I sail on less regularly which is a Reichel Pugh designed carbon 50 footer.
2. Main OPB is every Thursday for twilights, every second weekend for offshore racing and occasional bigger races. I was doing the Brisbane to Gladstone, for example, before the virus killed everything. The less regular OPB is just casual weekends when I'm back in Sydney now.
3. Sure, happy to get you some video once we're back to racing. We won the last twilight before the lockdown so I'm sure video won't be a problem.
Do you want to know the best thing about sailing OPBs? The maintenance cost

Re: Catamarans in 50kt winds
Ha, interesting. I sailed Basho's original BH41 back in the day. I agree, quick boat back then, still not slow now, and certainly still way faster than a lot of the cruising boats referenced here.

Is that the Bomb you're referring to? Did you sail it in Coffs?

Well, I have to agree with that. MOB's maintenance costs are effin ridiculous, even compared to chartering an OPB.

I hear ya! I used to help organise stuff on the raceboat in Sydney so I saw the money ... Also, I did that charter a few years ago we talked about in Greece out of Rhodes. Not cheap but a great week of sailing.

The boat that became B52 if memory serves me correctly. A lot of boats between then and now.

Re: Catamarans in 50kt winds
Very small world. I sailed on her when she still had that new boat smell and had never even had water in the water tanks...
But that's how we all rolled back then, such was the attention to weight. As a bowman I was often the only crewmember allowed to take a second layer of clothing onboard for day races (a spray top of some type), and shoes ok if you wore them, if not, leave them on the dock to save weight, etc
