Catamaran "Second Wind" flipped near Aruba

I can only find Facebook information from the Aruban Coastguard. Boat name "Second Wind"
From the post:
The Caribbean Coast Guard received a report yesterday that a catamaran was in distress 150 miles northwest of Aruba. The catamaran with four men on board was sinking, forcing the crew to quickly exit the vessel. The patrol aircraft of the Coast Guard was directly directed by the Maritime Operation Center (MOC) to the specified location in order to increase pole altitude. Once on location, the crew of the Dash aircraft noticed the passengers were flying on a rescue raft and their vessel, named Second Wind, was sinking. The Coast Guard helicopter was meanwhile on its way to "cough" the 4 men. To keep an eye on the rescue fleet, the Coast Guard aircraft kept flying nearby until the helicopter arrived to assist the drowning.
Upon arriving at the location, the helicopter crew lifted up the people of the rescue fleet and took them to Curaçao. Arrived in Curaçao, the men were transferred to the immigration service to then return home safely. The MOC has sent out a NAVTEX message to all ships in the vicinity to look out for the sinking catamaran at sea.

Lagoon 42. Escape hatch failed from the post I saw on the Lagoon Owners Group on FB. The boat had been wrecked and the current owner rebuilt the boat and this was the first voyage to Aruba.

that is cruising cat that has propeller after rudder, possibly lagoon. my guess, they played with too much sails downwind Also one notices back of boat under water, meaning back of boat not water tight. Likley because of too many upgrades and one cannot keep watertightness.

Curious (monohuller ): how does a failed escape hatch cause the boat to capsize?

Severe flooding in one hull. Lagoons from what I know allow water to travel basically the full length of the boat from engine room to almost all the way to the forepeak. Flooding would lower the hull into the water causing righting moment to be severely impacted. Then add wind and wave action and presumably pressure from the sails = disaster strikes.

Many modern cats have hatches on the inside topsides of the hulls, just above the waterline. The idea is that with the cat flipped the hatch will still be above the new waterline and can allow access to the interior without swimming under the boat. You wouldn't want that hatch to open in rough going...

The area north of Aruba and west to north of the Magdalena river in Colombia is the roughest place in the Caribbean - go look at the pilot charts. This is an area to avoid. I knew of a German boat that sank there. Coming from the west it is best to drop south and stay behind the Guajira peninsula until ready to make the dash to windward to Aruba. Westbound, dropping south behind the peninsula will cut down on the blast of wind and waves.

It is always sad to lose a boat... Good that no one was lost.

For cats built in Europe, or built elsewhere that carry a CE Category A or B rating escape hatches are required by Recreational Craft Directive (RCD) 2013/53/EU.

Quote:
Escape Hatch Requirements
For catamarans, the RCD requires an escape hatch to be installed if the craft is designed for Category A or Category B sailing. The escape hatch must meet the requirements of ISO 12216 and ISO 11812, including:

A minimum size of 0.3 square meters (3.2 square feet)
A maximum height of 1.2 meters (3.9 feet) above the waterline
A secure and reliable means of opening from both the inside and outside
A watertight seal to prevent water ingress
In practice, I know of more catamaran "sinkings" that have happened as a result of failed escape hatches than I know of escape hatches being used for their intended purpose. It sounds like this one failed the "watertight seal to prevent water ingress" requirement.
