catamaran flipped in Auckland tornado

Does anyone know what the cat was that was flipped in the tornado that hit Auckland waterfront yesterday?

There was a photo of a mono sunk and the cat flipped--I'm wondering if it's a schionning?

Yes, a schionning 50 ft. Blew right over the dock. Also knocked down a superyacht at the wharf.
Cat was called the Rosella

FrI'm the article and pics...

For the thousands and thousands of mono vs multi storm survivability posts in this forum, it looks like a "portacabin" is the best and most seaworthy thing to be in when the sh!t hits the fan. Ha ha ha.

Gees the purple suede upholstery is going to take a beating.

Closer to 60ft.

A lot to be said for heavy catamarans after seeing that thing fly over the dock.

Mother nature shows its claws and gives humans another lesson who is the real master on this planet.

Coincidence, that a number of bigger lows have merged to create one enormous belt of low pressure which has covered the entire NZ area. Looks scarying.

Citiation of WeatherWatch: "A storm in the Southern Ocean is helping send off this big low with one final act." Sounds like the end of human mankind. Good news: coming weekend the drama has an end.

Sad end for this cat ...

Holy Shizzle Stick Batman! Mother Nature taking revenge on Colonials for bad karma engendered against native inhabitants. Wifey and I just watched a movie last night in Berkeley called Nightingale. It is awful what European stock did to native peoples all over the planet. God, we were ugly mean sons of bitche$.

Re: catamaran flipped in Auckland tornado

Interesting that the marina cameras show Rosella cartwheeling over the dock with the mainsail at half hoist.

May this be a lesson to us all.

The zipper on your boom bag just aint going to cut the mustard in restraining the sail with a decent gust from behind.

Having learnt the hard way that during a decent gust the windage on a 2:1 halyard is enough to partially hoist the main, I have no intension of letting that happen again.

Maybe the outcome could have been different with the sails secured in a proper seamanlike fashion.

Re: catamaran flipped in Auckland tornado

Disconnecting the halyard from the main when not in use would be good seamanship. What kind of boat did you exercise such poor seamanship upon?!

Re: catamaran flipped in Auckland tornado

Thanks, good links. Got to love Sailing Scuttlebutt.

Weird that they righted the boat sideways, maybe because of lack of space? Usually you would sink the sterns and flip bows over sterns. And I guess the rig is on the bottom? I assume they’ll dredge all of that up, as there’s lots of value in the main, genoa, head foil, boom, mast, stack pack, shrouds and possibly electronics or at least cables.

I wonder whether she will be a write off?
