Catamaran Build Plans Recommendations?

Hello,

We are looking to purchase some plans to build our own Catamaran, minimum of 38' / 11.5 m. We are not interested in purchasing a kit, looking solely for plans to purchase. Any suggestions or recommendations are appreciated!

Note, we have a full machine shop as we have our own Engineering company & a shelter to build it in (Since for some reason people always ask)

Bruce Roberts has some. Contact Whitacre Yacht Design. At least for a while they were producing the Bruce Roberts plans and could customize.

I've never built one of these, but know Hal Whitacre. If he is still working with Bruce Roberts designs, you will get the advice you need.

Schionning

Kurt Hughes

Richard Woods

Chris White

Wharram

There are a lot more choices out there, if you find some of these intriguing you might post back about which ones, then someone might post other similar designers.

Re: Catamaran Build Plans Recommendations?

I am also in the research stage looking to start building a 13-15m catamaran in about 3 years.
Schionning Solitaire is exactly what my wife and I would like and they have a great name, however they do kits only, not scratch built plans. (I contacted them asking)

I have been watching a blog of someone building a Richard Woods power catamaran. Woods also has a consulting service, so when I get closer I might consider hiring him for advise even if not for one of his designs. His articles are pretty well thought out.

I have read that Bruce Roberts is pretty shady and would probably avoid him. (do your own research of course)

wharram's designs arent really to my taste and I don't have a haram to do all the sanding for me.

I have heard good things about Bob Oram, but his website doesn't work, so I am not sure what exactly he offers or even if he is still in buisness.

We had considered kits but are located in the US currently, so it would be exceptionally expensive to send them to us. PLus the ability to modify is really what we are interested in as well!

Thank you! I have been doing research for a while now and was curious about Bruce Roberts and ot be fair, his site seems less then safe. Thank you for the tips on Richard Woods, that could be helpful.

Re: Catamaran Build Plans Recommendations?

I would think hard about a Warram. Yes, they probably don't look like the catamarans you had in mind but these are seaworthy, safe, and comfortable boats that can take you around the world.

The plans are designed for the first time builder. They are MUCH easier to build than most catamarans so you are likely to actually end up with a boat not a half done project in the back of your shop. They are also much cheaper to build than most catamarans.

There's an excellent support system of people who have built Warram's and can give you pointers along the way.

Re: Catamaran Build Plans Recommendations?

Shipping for a single 40' container is around $3500 to the US depending on which coast and proximity to a major port.

Schionning's foam cored kit comes from South Africa and comes in 40' sections instead of the 4x8' pieces from ATL in Australia. Grainger and Orams kit - or Schionning balsa cored- is from Australia, but its a similar shipping cost.

Oram will sell just the plans - he doesn't mark-up the kit price at all, so he doesn't care if you make your own panels.

A looping catamaran ? Patrick Lüscher
The web page is in french, but I am sure the Designer speaks english.

The other catamaran designer that comes to my mind is Erik Lerouge.

Good luck
