Re: Capsized Austrian sailor rescued off Western Australia coast

That's actually a fairly nasty stretch of coast with sheer cliffs and no protected anchorages for about 100nm. They are caller the Zuytdorp Cliffs and are the grave sites of a number of east indiamen.

In the winter time they are subject to large swell from the Great Southern Ocean and a backwash from the cliffs can generate quiet nasty seas well out to sea.

In addition the prevailing winds tend to south westerly for much of the year and the winter weather is typically a series of SWly fronts passing through about once per week.

I have heard of those cliffs - the one spot on the whole Aussie coast even kayakers cannot land for about 80-100 miles, nasty sounding spot

And on top of that you have Leeuwin current running south against prevailing winds.
Can result in some nasty backless waves when beating.

Doubt it was a wave. Probably had too much sail up.

Hard on the wind, everything sheeted in tight, drive the leeward bow into a wave, over she goes.

Stunning picture off the FLIR camera anyway. Dinghy floated well though bet he would have liked to have a cowling over the bow to keep the wind and spray off. Looks like he had a sea anchor out.

Re: Capsized Austrian sailor rescued off Western Australia coast

"The man was en route to Fremantle south of Perth when his 11-metre catamaran overturned, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said."

Other than that we will probably never know.
