Can you have Comfort, Value and Performance in a Catamaran?
Can I have value, performance and comfort in one boat? It does not seem like it. Let's say my budget is 750k but I don't want to buy anything older than 2015. The boat must be >48ft. I have 4 kids and I'd like a minimum of 4 cabins. I prioritize comfort and value but I would LOVE a bit of performance. From what I've read, it's going to be difficult.
Requirements: - 2015 or newer
- 750k or lessr
- 4 cabin minumum
- 48' or bigger
- hybrid helm, (no flybridge. Aft helm not preferred...but
- safe
with these requirements i'm steered towards the production cats. Leopard 48, FP Saba or Lagoon 52S. I also like the older Privilege 5 or Serie 5.
I read (and looked at specs!) that these boats are heavy and not going to move too well.
If you needed comfort and value, what boat would you choose that would give it a leg up on the 'performance' side (or can i have it too?).

We love our SABA - Every creature comfort and plenty of space but we won't win any races. You'd be off a bit on the price as well. Good luck on your quest.

fair enough. But..... Is the performance difference between Lagoon, FP, Leopard, Privilege negligible?

I'd say yes. But take Privilege out of that mix as it's fit and finish is substantially higher.

I've seen some used privilege (2014, 2015) for $800k. That would be in my budget. Does a privilege perform better than those?

This is the answer. Unless you build yourself.

Perhaps have a look at a Seawind 1600?
Huge, but more performance oriented then the big 4.

I don't know if I really want to mess with Daggerboards on the Seawind (do they break away without ripping a hole in the hull?). I also don't love the opening of the hardtop over the cockpit that attaches to the Saloon (i guess you just put the rain protection in a storm). enclosed helm would be nice too.... ( I guess we can pick apart every boat).

Re: Can you have Comfort, Value and Performance in a Catamaran?
You might want to see if you can find a Privilege Series 5 that was docked next to me about 6 weeks ago at the Lauderdale Marine Center. It was crushed by a mega yacht and the owner was dropping it off there for repairs. He stated matter of factly that he was done with the boat regardless of the repair. It was in near new shape and I'd guess the repairs would range between $150 and $200k. If you could buy that boat for $500k, you would have a $1.3m boat for a very good price. Maybe call LMC and see if they know where the boat is and who to contact. I almost said "Sold" when he was talking to me as this is one of my favorites.

Do you remember the name? There is one called 'Whishing Whale' and another 'hoofbeats' around.

Re: Can you have Comfort, Value and Performance in a Catamaran?
Those don't sound familiar. I do know it was a 4 cabin model. We went through the boat and it really was fantastic, just crushed on the hulls. But not hurricane crushed and should be somewhat easy to fix. I'd just call LMC.

Take a look at Knysna 500SE - neither the Privilege nor the Knysna are performance as such but they will be streets ahead of the production boats in every area.
Also if you really want performance then that means daggerboards and daggerboards mean constraints on space.
