Re: Big hole through side of a cat.

Could be just a very unique paint job done by somebody with a twisted sense of humor

Re: Big hole through side of a cat.

We had a Mk 2 Iroquios and it was a great boat but like most boats it had some weaknesses.
The centre board cases were close to the outside edge of the hull and there was insufficient reinforcing lamination at the stress raisers at either end of the case where it met the underwater hull. This was compunded by sailing with the lee centreboard up and the windward one down to minimise the risk of capsize the sideways force of which put a lot of stress trying to tear the whole case outwards from the hull. Cracking at the corner would start and eventually such a failure could occur. There was a pretty active Iroquois owners group then and the fix was to overlaminate around that junction to reduce the stress at that point and transfer the load over a wider area.

Its pretty impressive how high it floats with such severe damage though!

Is there not a bulkhead attaching the trunk to the hull running all the way up the topsides as well as all the way across the beam of the individual hull?

Re: Big hole through side of a cat.

Some designs, particularly with daggerboards, have a weak area to lose a board rather than damage the hull.

Re: Big hole through side of a cat.

From the KNRM, Royal Netherlands Rescue service, website;

By: Roland de Jong
NEELTJE JANS - Last night the KNRM brought a catamaran to Neeltje Jans who was sinking after a collision with an unknown object.

Around half past six the lifeboat Koopmansdank was called up for the report. The 9.5 meter long catamaran with cabin was en route from Harich to Brouwershaven. Near a buoy, the boat hit something hard. Because of this a large piece of one of the floats tore off the boat.

A leak occurred and the rescuers from the Neeltje Jans KNRM station were called in to help the boat, called the 'Mona'. A pilot boat provided assistance until the lifeboat arrived. The Koopmansdank has accompanied the yacht to the outer harbor of the Roompot lock. It is moored there.

According to a KNRM spokesperson, there was a serious damage.
