Best Cat for Circumnavigation?
Hi, I wanted to pick your brains on what you considered the best catamaran for a circumnavigation and why? Special focus on quality to not have to repair the boat around the world.
Cheers,
Achim

if you don't go you still will have to repair the boat. But not around the world.

Sorry but this doen't make any sense all unless you specify which route, budget, timing and comfort level..
I want to do it east to west through three capes and as fast as possible. The boat requested for that will be much different the one that will make traditional route west to east through Panama and in 10 years..
Cheers

check out S/V Impi on youtube. These two are circumnavigating (when they're not in "spectacular" New Caledonia LOL-you have to watch the the channel to understand that) in a Lagoon 440. That would be my choice for one reason-its big and heavy which right or wrong would be harder for me to turtle.

Someone else's cat. You don't have to pay for repairs.

I have an idea, perhaps you should bolt big lead keels to the bottom of one.
In answer to the Question - Outremer. Something high quality and good performance. If you like the look and feel of a condo, then dont bother with the rig and sails and use that money to pay for fuel.

I have doubts about Outremer as far as circumnavigation is concerned. I've sailed extensively the O51 and I believe the payload can be an issue. When people start loading the boat with AC, genset, extra fuel, plenty of spares, dishwasher, laundry machine, water maker, solar panell, largest dinghy possible with most powerful outboard, etc.. Outremer is not anymore an Outremer.. And I am referring to O51 which cost a million USD with all these options. O45 will be even more problematic..
FP and Lagoons are perfectly suited for this purpose at half price if you are not in hurry and will make the traditional way.
Otherwise Catana's or even Nauthitec's can be an alternative; they are almost as fast as Outremer, with more payload and slightly cheaper..
Cheers

Re: Best Cat for Circumnavigation?
Without any hint of doubt the Catalac 10m! I am liveaboarding one for 9 years plus in very haesh tropical island environment without needing too much maintenance. The hulls can beach easily to ckean bottom, even strip and aint it. The ease of handling under sail is amazing. The cat is very forgiving when sail trimming. The two inboard diesels, that consume never more than gallon per hour at 6-7 knots, solar panels on top of housing, makes it reliable for energy!
The living space is ample for two couples and extra hand. The head is simple to maintain. Integral fresh water tankage I constructed in center of hulls are adequate for passage making. Protected helm great in poor weather, auto pilot on hydraulic steering allows for relaxed sailing.
