Bavaria Measurements

What is it with Bavaria's length measurements that makes the model names appear to be much shorter than the official documents? Examples:

2005 Bavaria 38, claimed to be 40’, while Bavaria’s specs indicate LOA to be 11,72 m / approx. 38.5’.

1999 Bavaria 42, claimed to be 44’, while Bavaria’s specs indicate LOA to be 12,99 m / approx. 42.5’. (For this one, even the vessel’s certificate of documentation states that length is 44.7’.)

I understand the concept of rounding, which all manufacturers do when it comes to model names, but I have not experienced any others with discrepancies such as Bavaria.

Do the Germans measure boats differently than the rest of us?

Re: Bavaria Measurements

Why would they under-sell the length of the boats? 2' is significant.

I can imagine someone would like to over-sell the length by pretending that the boat is longer than what it really is, but not the other way around.

See the FP Lucia 40 (38 feet) the Lipari 41 (39) as examples of over selling.

Re: Bavaria Measurements

Most mass market brands do that but I believe that on Bavaria, at least on those of that vintage, the dimensions that come as LOA on the papers are not the LOA but the hull length. Some other brands do the same. That is important to pay less on marinas.

For the LOA the anchor stand should count but they don't consider it.

Re: Bavaria Measurements

There's rounding + whether a bowsprit is included in the measurement. If you include the bowsprit then round - it can quickly get out of hand. I prefer LWL.

LWL is not the best dimension to evaluate the length of a boat since the type of bow and stern can give very different numbers for boats with approximately the same hull length and size.

In Europe hull size is what is used mostly by manufacturers regarding boat size, as a technical dimension, that in many cases is different from the name they give to the boat (in feet). I agree that is misleading.

Re: Bavaria Measurements

What "official documents" show the 38 as 40ft and the 42 as 44ft?

Edit: I'd guess that the difference between Bavaria specs and the larger number is the pulpit extent forward of the bow.

Bavaria's 38 etc is not LOD, it's LOA without pulpit.

"The strict interpretation of LOA is to include only parts that are molded into the hull or deck. This is the standard that was adopted by the American Boat and Yacht Council back in 2003 (Standard S-8). "

Unfortunately marinas prefer to use LOA including pulpit when working out fees

As I said by far the most common European length that is on the boat document is Hull Length. LOD denomination is not used in Europe.

And yes, that is what counts for marinas because you gave the boat papers and they take the measure that is on the papers. Yes marinas pay for LOA but everybody pays less due to the measure on the papers being hull lenght. It appears only as length. Lots of boats in Europe with a hull length of 11.99 and 12.99, for obvious reasons.

That is the case with the Bavaria 41 (11.99)
https://www.bavaria-yachtbau.com/sai...ruiser41s.html
Jeanneau 419 (11.99)
Sun Odyssey 419 | Jeanneau Boats
Oceanis 41.1 (11.98)
Sailboats Oceanis 41.1 - Sailing Yacht Beneteau
Hanse 415 (11.99)
https://www.hanseyachts.com/gb/boats...ification.html
and more.

They use LOA for publicity, Hull length on the boat papers. Everybody that owned a recent European sailboat knows that what appears on the boat papers as Length is Hull lenght. That helps to sell boats due to diminished marina costs.

Re: Bavaria Measurements

As far i try to understand OP question as why, if a brand market a 40 ft boat and the reality are 38 ft in papers or not, i mean 38 ft are 38 ft, the brand is trying to cheat you with 40 ft.... now marinas charge by LOA dimensions in papers, but dont take by granted , i see lots of dock masters running a tape line from bow pulpit to stern to verify those dimensions..

Yes you get that right except that what comes in the boat papers, at least in Europe, it is not LOA but just length and the length that is there is hull length.

Regarding measuring the boat maybe that happens in US. In Europe they accept what are in the papers that are what builders have provided as length. Never saw anyone questioning the dimensions on the boat papers.

LOA is not the maximum length of the hull but Length Over All and that means not the hull but all parts of the boat including poles and anchor stands.

In EU what comes in the papers is not Hull Length but just Length.

In China and Russia I have no idea.

If they measured your boat that's because they did not trust your papers. I have certainly sailed much more in Europe than you, been many times in Palma, with different boats and they never questioned my papers neither I saw nobody being measured, not there or anywhere. Off course that does not mean that it don't happen if they find something fishy, but certainly that is very rare.
