Bar B Q

hi,, i want to fit a bbq on the rear of my catamaran but not sure what is best, what do most people do, i am thinking that the charcoal could make a rite old mess if getting blown around so maybe a gas one is the way to go,, any ideas / advice please.

Re: Bar B Q

I think most all are LPG, propane. I prefer my steak grilled with charcoal though. Guess you would have to have a weather window to use charcoal.

The thing that worries me about LPG on a boat is, if it leaks, it is heavier than air...

Re: Bar B Q

I like propane. Charcoal worries me. If the BBQ tips over, loose bolt etc, those coals are very hard to completely put out fast.

I've noticed that a lack of stern railings on my cat makes the traditional stern mounting of a round BBQ to the rail impossible. I do have a large deck area aft of the cockpit and patio area, and I notice that West Marine sells SS rectangular "floor model" BBQs for which you buy screw-in bottles of gas. This would eliminate the need to tie-in to the vessel's propane tanks, and the attendant risk of leaks. The cooking area is larger than the traditional circular boat BBQs. I'd have to give some thought to a simple way of (temporarily) securing it in place for use. How have other cat owners addressed the BBQ issue?

We've used a fishing rod holder with the fishing rod holder mount on a cat wth no rail. Worked well

Re: Bar B Q

I do not have any gas on my catamarn for safety reasons.

So my BBQ is only charcoal. I have it mounted aft of the cockpit where it is sheltered from the wind by the bimini which works perfectly fine when at anchor. I have a 1L water bottle at stand-by should there ever be problems and can ditch the whole BBQ in about 5 seconds. I have used it at least 100 times without any problems ( even when sailing ).

I am now using a 43 cm diameter MAGMA charcoal grill, found the smaller 37 cm version too small even when grilling just for myself. The next step up will be an ENO grill.

The Dickerson Sea-B-Que is the only BBQ that has worked well in a wind for me.

Re: Bar B Q

Well thanks all for your opinions , seems , like most things , there are varying opinions , to me , importantly , there is no wholesale condemnation of charcoal , ok some worries about spillage etc but proper fire blanket and heat resistant gloves with bucket of water handy should lay those fears to rest , also gas is a viable option , the mentioned fears over leaks etc are of no worry to me as I spend my working life connecting and disconnecting pressurised gas lines , myself I can see advantages in both , personally I like the taste of charcoal and the ease and cleanliness of the gas ,,,I guess it will depend on logistics of fitting .thank you all , Cherod .

I like my gas BBQ. And if there is any leak, it will be overboard.

That looks the ticket, Stu. My daughter has been concerned that we won't be able to smoke ribs on a sailboat. lol I told her she'd just have to deal with them on gas.

You can use a covered gas BBQ as a smoker. You can buy any number of commercial "smoker boxes" or just make your own with a foil pan covered with more foil with a few holes poked in the cover - or even just a a length of heavy duty foil.

Soak wood chips for 1/2 an hour or so , put them in the smoker box and put it on one side of the BBQ.

Re: Bar B Q

I mounted my BBQ in my cockpit table, works great, good for socialising while cooking and a bit protected if its windy. When the BBQ is cooked we put the teak top on and its cool enough to use the cockpit table as usual. i also dont think BBQs hanging on the rail look thet good.

Re: Bar B Q

Stu,
do you grill with the dingy up in the davits? how close is your dink to the grill? i have always been concerned about the proximity of the grill to the dink fuel and the tubes, but that may more of an issue with charcoal than gas....

cheers
john
