Re: Attaching anchor chain to bridle?

I'd agree with others, my mantus hook has never fallen off even when slack and I have yet to break the plastic part but I have 2 spares if I do. I've also considered the fact that a short piece of line of a zip tie could secure the hook into the chain as well.

Mantus "headquarters" is about 2 miles from my office. The guys builds some good stuff. Very creative. The anchor bridle he sells is overkill for my boat but I sleep very well at night.

Re: Attaching anchor chain to bridle?

A dyneema soft shackle works perfectly.

I like this one:

Run the soft shackle through a chain link and a large stainless anchor shackle on the bridle. I use a stainless shackle on the bridle because it is smoother than galvanized.

If you want to attach the bridle with a soft shackle to an anchor rope, you can make a dyneema continuous loop and use a Prusik knot (Prusik Knot | How to tie the Prusik Knot | Slide/Grip Knots).

Use the soft shackle to attach the Prusik knot to the stainless bridle shackle.

I hope what I wrote makes sense... Again, all of these work perfectly. I never had a problem.

There are many Youtube videos on how to make the soft shackle and continuous loop yourself.

Re: Attaching anchor chain to bridle?

Mantus has a NG claw that works 24/7.
Dyneema is the worst choice.
From mountain climbing. A butterfly knot or prussic knot on a short loop, then attach bridle. Both are supercharged rolling hitches.

Second Mikes advice. A rolling hitch is quick and easy to tie, no problem undoing even after a 50k storm and the price is right. Worked 24/7/365 for me.

Good grief, how much is one of them? I'll stick to the chain hook and a loop of chain to keep the load on.

And the thought floating around in my mind, is that someone (the OP) is bored in "paradise", & needs something to grouse about. So why not take up surfing? After a good day in the water you'll sleep right through any non-critical anchor rode rumblings.

Somewhere around 4000 nights at anchor over 30 years, never had one fall off .... $10 stainless steel eye grab hook.
Hook it on the chain, hold on to the snubber line as the chain is paid out until the loop is big enough for the weight to hold the hook on. Big bubbles, no troubles

Ck the working load on the snap shackel. Probably way less by the time you get one small enough to fit through the chain.

Lancelot9899, any pics?

Never had it fall off . And a lot cheaper than a mantus
That's not the answer for a multihull. Most of the time we anchor in such shallow water that the chain hook will be on the bottom. This design is almost guaranteed to come off when shifting on the bottom. Would be great for a mono or trawler because the hook would never see the bottom....

Again, not the answer for a multihull. This is also guaranteed to come off when it's on the bottom. Could work for a mono though...

Re: Attaching anchor chain to bridle?

I second and third the Mantus chain hook. I have the SS model and think I paid 32 bucks. Has never come off, is simple to install even for newbie crew members. The plastic hook broke early on and Mantus sent me two new material replacements free of charge. No problem since. It's foolproof, chafe proof and practically idiot proof. Four and a half years cruising and most on the hook is my experience with the Mantus...

The king anchor chain snubber held my boat during hurricane Wilma.

Soft Shackles work great for attaching anchor chain to the bridle.

LOL. You maybe right this is a "first world problem", but I do surf whenever I can.

Thanks to everyone for their well found experience and solutions. I think that this problem is worse on multihulls than monos, as we usually have much longer bridles than the short snubbers or bridles that monos use. A "perfect solution" for a mono may be less effective on a multi. A reason why I posted under the "multihull" section.

In slack water, my long bridle will regularly sit on the bottom and jiggle, enabling the most intricate devises to detach. When the anchor loads up again the anchor windlass is now under load causing the chain running over my foredeck to rise, fall and clatter, causing enough noise to wake all on board. Not the end of the world, but a PITA.

I haven't tried knots. Some of the suggested knots may be a better solution. I can't even pronounce their name, let alone tie them, so there's a learning curve ahead.

Thanks Sid. I've still got the Mantus hook. It worked fine until the dodgy plastic retainer broke, then it frequently fell off. Sounds like I need the Mk 2 plastic retainer.
