just been on the phone to phil,the lady is his georgeous long time friend "Lena",so no doubt he has been eating well,that is untill they ran out of basics.

latest scuttlebutt is the coast guard were out there as well looking for phil,and were a bit miffed that JP got there first,so JP has been issued a fine by the marine police.

also as a "securite" was issued,the vessel will need to be inspected by the coast guard before leaving.

other wise all well on the ground just trying to get some power hooked up and acertain if the batteries need replacing.

Is this normal? sounds a little strange to fine someone for helping a fellow mariner.

Then again I know absolutely nothing about the Azores. Anyone have local knowledge of what that is all about?

he probably didnt inform the coast guard of his intentions before leaving leaving them out of the loop with information regarding a vessel that they were watching and asked any vessels with info to report in.........sorta like witnessing a crime but not reporting it.

Funny how people like to discuss how to handle these situations

Batteries dying, genset failing, plumbing failing, furler jamming... how long do I need to go on with this list before we all recognize it as the points discussed so often.

His biggest worry was probably running out of Tanqueray

They must be a lot different from the USCG because I hear "security's" all the time and the CG, appropriately, doesn't do anything more than log them. Even if boats go aground and report it, the CG usually just asks them how many SOB's etc. ad nauseum, and then advises them to put on their life jackets and call tow boat at the next high tide. So, since Boaty didn't ask them for help and also didn't use the pan or mayday words, why would they be out looking for him? Even if they did broadcast on the radio that they were out looking for the cat, how can they prove that JP was aware of those broadcasts or that they were also looking for him? Maybe he happened to duck out of the cabin when they were transmitting, or engine noise was too loud, so didn't hear them? Fining him sounds pretty crazy to me.

Hard to compare sailors on the east coast with those on a small island group. East coast sailors will be well sprinkled with some pretty green and maybe even stupid people doing goofy things hoping to be saved by the coast guard. Sailors from these small island groups usually sailed their boat offshore to get there so on average a cut above your typical coastal cruiser.

sorry i dont have all the details,it is possible JP left without getting clearance from the marine police and port captain.
