If memory serves me, it was quite common in the old days, before things like bleach, for the water to become foul after about a month. Given time the bugs would die off and the water would again be drinkable.
Water has microbes in it who continue to multiply while the water is in the container. They eventually die off. You just can't drink the water till they do.

was just me being faececious there is no current "wife",and the kids are all growed up,i think the lady with him might be his portugese lady friend ,as he said that he was more or less sailing the vessel single handed.

Even for someone with vast experience that certainly is a very large undertaking. I can't imagine it.
