Its also possible a passing ship said 'where the hell do you think you're going' about 3 minutes before he turned South

phil tends to buy stuff like laptops,and spots etc when he has the cash from the deposit as an investment for the delivery and future deliveries/

my guess is if he is still heading south tommorow he will stop in st martin for a week or so.

I use UGRIB and there is also ZYGRIB. They work great to download off a sat phone.

When you do that, understand the limitations of grib files: they are computer generated, no human weather forecaster has intervened. So what you get is a computer fantasy of what may happen. The devil is in the details. The shapes of weather systems are based on data, as are the wave height estimates, but when you project it into the future it is at best an educated guess. True Dat. I don't know the N. Atlantic, but sailing with gribs along 20 degrees north from Mexico to Hilo, after a week or more we began adding 15-20 kts. to the forecast and got a good rough estimate. I don't think, from a cursory view of his leaving posts, that he has grib weather. I think he's either going to St. Martin as has been suggested or just playing the wind and waves that come his way, with an experienced eye to weather systems, barometer, etc.

Lots of info on wind speed and direction, wave height and period along with direction. Some historical data also.

I'm not sure what this particular Lagoon 440 is equipped with...as this is the only info posted here about it...

There was a 440 recently sold in Ft. Lauderdale which had a Raymarine plotter/MFD w/ Sirius Marine Weather receiver...and I've seen a few 440 owner's versions brokerage listed showing equipped w/ Icom M-802 HF/SSB radios....
So, it's possible the previous owner equipped this 440 in a similar fashion...





I did an ITU database search (to determine its radio installation and licenses), but found no vessels named "Bonne Etoille" (as Phil wrote), although I found 4 named "Bonne Etoile", one USA and three French...(the 3 French have gross tonnage listed as 1 tonne, 24 tonnes, and 39 tonnes....and all list VHF radio, but not MF, HF, SSB, EPIRB...but this is not surprising as the database is full of holes/missing info)

So, I wasn't able to find anything useful their about this particular Lagoon 440, from the ITU...

Perhaps the previous owner equipped the boat with HF radio and/or sat phone, etc. but the new owners haven't owned her very long (about 4 months) and didn't seem to be the type to equip her for this run...

Actually you'd be surprised how petty owners can be in that regards. Often expecting the skipper to bring EPIRBs extra electronics etc
