Anchors for Catamarans

I am expect there are a few opinions on the best anchor for a catamaran for a given bottom. I am sailing a Nautitech 441 in the Windward Islands. The boat came with a 20kg FOB plow anchor and 60 Meters of 10mm chain. The spare is a 20 kg Delta with a chain & rope rode. So far the few times I used the FOB it set well. Thinking of an upgrade such as a Spade, Rocna, or Mantus. I think a 25 Kg spade would fit but probably not a 25 kg Mantus. Anyone have experience with the FOB anchor vs the others?

Interesting. I thought only Nautitech had the anchor on the bow. All other Catamarans I sailed have central anchor deployment Mine is on the port bow. Two very different anchors. Care to comment on how you choose which one you use?

I love my Rocna 25, maybe too big for my 33 for catamaran? It sets like hydraulic cement!

Re: Anchors for Catamarans

Very poor quality old pic, but Ive got 2 on the bow also (center line though). A Bruce (primary, 20kg) and a Fortress. The Bruce has served me well for many years and many venues (Florida, Texas, Bahamas, ...most of the W Carib).

However if I were buying today I would go with a newer generation of anchor as the primary, like a Ronca.Click image for larger version

Re: Anchors for Catamarans

If you go to the section of CF in Engineering & Systems, then to Anchoring & Mooring section, you'll find a series of underwater videos by Steve of s/v Panope who tested & filmed the setting, and most importantly, the re-setting of all the major brands of anchors. Seeing is believing.

Cutting to the chase, the 2 best anchors by quite a margin are the Excel and the Spade.

For very soft bottoms, like muddy bays or riverbeds, the appropriately sized Fortress is the go-to solution.

Re: Anchors for Catamarans

In my view, the best anchor designs for general primary use are:

Mantus M1
Rocna
Steel Spade
Manson Supreme

That's not my boat

I have a Rocna center mounted with 200' of chain. It's been fine in sand, mud, and grass.

Re: Anchors for Catamarans

Gday Captn Rehab,
We have a Lagoon 440 and a Rocna 40 KG. Its above spec and a 33KG would have sufficed. Just beting caustious we went just one size larger but we have not had any issues. In saying that I would have been very happy with a Manson Supreme or the Sarca Excell. I really believe that if you go for one of the top 5 new generation anchors you will be equally happy. While I remember, If the hoop is an issue Rocna make the Vulcan as well which is also rated high holding power.

The only thing that might make it more lively is if someone were to ask:

"What's the best anchor to hold my catamaran on the Northwest passage while I use my fully automatic weapon to hunt seal pups?" Ha ha ha

On topic and no joke, I use the 80lbs Rocna now on a high windage 50X25 cat. I had ordered a 50lbs Manson Supreme by mistake to replace my 60lbs Manson Supreme that was stolen off the bow (thanks Florida crackhead boaters). The 50lbs had me a bit nervous but also never budged an inch in any storm. The 60lbs Manson Supreme held through a direct hit hurricane by the way. I left the boat and she was still in the same spot after the eye of,I think, Irma passed over.
