My rough rule of thumb is that under 13 Metres - all things being equal sensible attention to detail etc - GRP will probably be lighter than aluminium. Above that Aluminium can be lighter and in many cases very much lighter, eg a 48 ft FP is around 15 Toone and I would think your Mumby would be under 11? maybe under 10?

- YMMV, but I've just gone almost 3 years between bottom jobs with Petit Vivid, with zero hard growth. Very impressed.
That is very impressive, where is the boat located? as in water temps etc?

Re: Aluminium SailBoats VS Fiberglass SailBoats

Small alloy hulls ARE heavier.

It takes plenty of ribs to support the skin. This makes most of the weight. Same size (small) grp can be build in sandwich-foam - and thus are lighter than a grid built alloy hull.

But it is not a huge difference and in specific cases may be reversed too - at times with very unpleasant visual after-effects.

For alloys, the interesting material is called (I think) strongall, which, if I am not mistaken, allows to build no frame alloy hulls.

I have seen such a hull in NZ. And I did like it.

I'd say mine would be around 10t loaded, as full time live aboard. Light ship for a simple example is around 7t, but most will kit them out a bit more of course. A mates was weighed at 5.5t as a mechanically complete, sailing boat, with no interior and bare basics systems.

Re the bottom paint, the boat lives in a canal estate in Moreton Bay, Brisbane. Water temps vary from around 18-27ºC. We will get fresh water running into the canals when it rains, which would no doubt help. We've just repainted mine and a mates Mumby's at about the same time with Vivid. His is full time voyaging while mine only gets out every couple of weeks at the moment. It'll be interesting to see how they compare.

Re: Aluminium SailBoats VS Fiberglass SailBoats

I have a FG boat Pearson 30 and an aluminum custom 44. I much prefer the aluminum, but I feel like the aluminum boat is much stronger if we take a hit.

Thought you might be - I would be very interested to see how you go versus your mates boat
