5/6 person dinghy for catamaran

Hello can anyone recommend a moderate priced rigid inflatable boat/dinghy for 40 foot catamaran?

There's a reason aluminium RIBs of 3.2 - 3.4m are so popular amongst cruising yachts ...

IMO, weight light enough for a single person to be able to drag it (incl outboard) up a beach is a must. Which means aluminium (for the beating it will have), a minimum of compartments and double floors, no centre console etc. Also check your davit rating.

Re: 5/6 person dinghy for catamaran

One time, we bought a Gemini RIB, aluminum. It weighed ~50 lbs. less than the Swift of the same size, and was less expensive. As it turned out, the cost & weight savings was by using light weight hypalon, rather than the heavier weight hypalon of the Swift. Imo, it was a poor choice; the weight savings was not worth the poorer quality. But ya know, we don't know what ya don't know.

That dinghy was stolen and set afire, but we found the hull, and took it back to Gemini for re-tubing. Those light weight tubes didn't have enough thickness on the tops of the tubes, and sun-deteriorated way too fast. So eventually about 8-1/2 yrs ago now, we had it re-tubed again, this time with West German pvc, and it is holding up well.

We use a medium sized fender under it to help roll it up beaches, sort of like a log roller. The motor is a 15hp Yamaha 2-stroke, weight ~ 100 lbs.

40 foot cat would normally be limited to around 2.9m - 3.2m range. Aluminum double floor with bow locker. Get the fuel tank shaped to fit in the bow locker. Hypalon for longevity. No center console. 15-20 Hp modern battery-less EFI or Enduro 15 2 stroke Yamaha. Both are pretty easy to start. AB is very popular in the Caribbean for a reason

I’d get a new 10 or 11 foot Highfield dinghy, with a 20-30HP engine. I concur with the other poster that a 4 stroke EFInisnthe way to go.

Your cat can hold it and you’ll have enough room in the dinghy to carry 4-5 people, or more commonly, 4-8 Jerry cans or grocery bags.
