2015 35' Gemini Legacy 35 Question for Owners

Hello,

I am currently working on an inspection on a 2015 35' Gemini Legacy 35. During the inspection it appeared the main bulkhead between the main salon and forward staterooms shifted slightly (from a previous de-masting). I could see spacing in the forward port and starboard doors to the staterooms. When I removed the molding I found set screws that were about 1/4 of an inch out to (what I believe) was to close the gap between the shifted bulkhead and the doors.

My question is, for the Gemini Legacy 35 owners, is this something that is normal in the production of these vessels? I tried to call Catalina in Largo, Florida and they have not responded to me in over two weeks. Please see the photos below and tell me what you think or know. Thanks.

Was the dismasting the result of wind (should go over before causing bulkhead damamge), rigging error (2015 is too new for rigging to wear out), or striking a bridge? The latter would cause unusual compression forces.

It is the theory. This boat came from the Caribbean and was a hurricane boat, but the bulkhead has definately shifted.

I'll just say this, then my other opinion..........

The doors in a Gemini are just privacy doors.......... not really meant to close up tightly. The gap under my shower door leaves much to be desired.

However, that one photo with the crack..... Just don't walk away, run.

I'll never understand why people think that buying a boat that was beat to $h!t is a good idea...............

If you get it close to for free, it might be a good deal...

Paying a sum higher then 4 digits would be a reason not to walk but to run, indeed.

The crack isn't in the bulkhead though just some cheap looking lining or fibreglass covering. That part of the bulkhead could probably be cut away and replaced. I suppose it all depends on what other damage there is. The potential owner might be happy to replace/fix the issues.

The OP isn't buying the boat himself. It reads more as if he is performing a survey on the boat for someone and has tried to contact Gemini to get some information buy they haven't responded hence him asking other Gemini owners about one or two aspects.

Yes I agree with that. However, if the boat was thrown around enough to cause that crack on an interior molding, what other damage can't be seen?

No you would be wrong. Trying to confirm if what I found was done at the factory or was in fact a repair job after the fact.

I looked at the photos again, I don't think anyone will be able respond directly to the question of the door hinge screws. Maybe, could have been installed and then needed to be repositioned.

But that crack, on an interior liner, looks to be on the main bulkhead between the starboard hull head and galley. Is that where it is?

The bulkhead is the main bulkhead in the photos (between the fore end of the main salon and the forward staterooms). The screws in the photos that are partially out were there to set the molding aroiund the doorway to close the gap between the door and the bulkhead. They held nothing. Only to act as a stopper to push the molding out more from the bulkhead door cut outs. They were not part of the hinges. It is unusual to see as I have owned a Gemini 105Mc and that was never there in my doorway moldings.

Yeah, after looking at the photos yet again, those screws do not look hinge screws. And no, it doesn't seem like that those would be something you would see in a 105Mc.

But, Hunter built most of the Legacy's. And while I've been on a few, maybe they did things different than Tony.

Still, I'd be concerned about that crack, or maybe it's nothing......

Edited to add: Catalina or Hunter build?

By chance is this the Gemini that was on auction in St. Thomas? It was reported to be in dry dock and flipped by hurricane. Sold for ~5K and I would assume the purchaser is planning to part it out.
