2007 lagoon 420

Hello fellow Sailors
Would like to hear if anybody has fully disassembled the small harken rear winch without having to cut an access hole to remove it.

Re: 2007 lagoon 420

To be honest Paul, we never use our manual davit winch. Just wondering if you really need to service it.

We raise and lower the dinghy on the davits by using the electric winch at the helm. We use the spinnaker blocks, attached to the bimini posts and run the lines to the electric winch via the blocks to ensure the load is in the right direction to avoid them jamming in the winch. We pull up the two lines alternately using the winch and lower them by easing them off the winch in the same way. When we used it, we found the position of the manual davit winch was not good, the lines kept jamming and a lot of effort was required to raise our heavy 14ft (4.2m) RIB with 15HP outboard.

Also, I have a theory that you should never service winches, as in my admittedly limited experience they never work properly again after being dismantled Better a noisy winch than a broken one.

Unless you want to replace your winch with a different model or a new one, you don't have to remove it to disassemble it for service.
Just be careful not to loose any part in the water.

Check the manual of your winch model, probably on Harken web site, on how to disassemble it.
