1989 privilege 48 / privilege 14.7 catamaran

Hi All
looking at purchasing a 1989 privilege 14.7 for our family of 4.
Wondering if there are any owners prior or current with some info on these
yachts.
They seem to be alot cheaper than other catamarans hoping and assuming this is only due to dated design.

Anyone have any info on sailing speeds one can expect ?
Any known weak points in the design we should look at ?

Any general remarks ?

Thanks in Advance

Very solid boat. Don't go particularly quickly but they will look after you very well while they get you there.

USUALLY more expensive than similar age/size cats so if this one is cheap there may be a reason. I recently found one for US$75k which was probably the cheapest Privilege of any size I'd ever seen advertised. That one needed a lot of cosmetic work (possibly other problems as well) but sold very quickly!

Lots of forwad window leaks can lead to a multitude of problems. Have a really competent surveyor or fly one In. A cheap or free, boat can so e times be the most expensive.

Kind of in the same boat, so to speak.

Looking at a 45' Leopard and, according to the seller, "It is the cheapest Leopard on the market!" I think he is right.

And there is a reason, actually, many, many reasons for it to be so cheap. Be aware, be afraid, be very afraid.

The privilege's were better built than many from what I have heard. And as mentioned heavy for a cat. Maybe that's a good thing...

Re: 1989 privilege 48 / privilege 14.7 catamaran

We have a 1993 Privilege 43, and have had her for 3 years. We have been impressed with the quality of her build, and feel she will last us for another 10 years, or the rest of our cruising life, after we finish refurbishing her - new engines and electronics, some hatches, add watermaker, etc, as the current kit is a bit tired. We have replaced the Standing rigging this year.

They are very solid yachts, and she seems to handle rough conditions well. We average half the wind speed roughly, but ease things off around 25Kts and over, as we don't want to stress her or us.She is much faster than my previous 40' Mono.

We have met a few privilege owners since we have had her, and all seem to love their boats. I also recommend you have her checked by a good surveyor prior to purchase so you know what you are getting.

cheers

Al

Hi ,
I have a 47 Privilage and am very happy apart from low bridge deck clearance this just means my weather windows may be smaller.

Yes. Survey before you buy.
I hope she is solid and a bargain for you.

My parents have a 1988 Privilege 48. Really a great boat. Sailed it in 25 kts of real wind at speed of 15 kts with a spinnaker. It now has 2 x Volvo D2-55 engines with sail drives and motors comfortably at 8.5 kts with both engines and it capable of motoring at 9.8 kts max speed. My dad is now 88 so he is looking to sell it. It is in very good shape, let me know if it interests you. Regards

Did these ever come in some owner's version with less than five cabins/heads?

This one has 4 cabins, each with its own head with WC, showier and sink; and a central double in the nacelle which is not really a cabin, but just for sleeping.
